Woodchucks and potholes
« on: June 20, 2006, 07:44:42 PM »
I hit a woodchuck today!  Believe it or not, this is the first animal I have hit on a motorcycle other that a few thousand bugs.  I have had a few close calls over the years and I've had my motorcycle license since 1981.  Anyways, it was not that bad.  The old "squishy" suspension that everyone makes fun of, absorbed the impact quite well.  I wonder if a "better" or firmer suspension would work as well in this situation.  I believe I hit the critter dead square and it basically was like an inverted pothole.  Thump Thump with no apparent damage.

Has anyone else had this or similar experiences?

By the way, no damage to my underwear either!

I've not hit anything live yet, but I had a turkey fly out eariler this year.  Not too close, but scared the bejesus out of me.  That would have been terribly messy.

How much wood did the woodchuck chuck before he went splat?  ::)
I've only been riding a few months and have already had a rabbit, squirrel, 2 geese, and a duck try to get me. How come I never see all of this wildlife when driving a car?

I took out a woodchuck at 188 yards with my Remington yesterday.  I guess that is one less woodchuck to hit with my 750.

Actually, I think porcupines=hedgehogs here also, but some call groundhogs/woodchucks hedgehogs as well.

hedge hogs are much smaller than porcupines, I've hit pines, my advice is DON"T do it,   Oak trees look nice and soft in comparison.

Nearly hit a small deer one day last week. I saw what I thought was an Irish Setter puppy on the shoulder of the road. As I got closer, he tried to run into my lane, thought better of it, and retreated to the ditch. As I passed, I saw all the white spots on his side and realized thatb was no puppy but a fawn...now where's his Mom, and is she about ready to run in front of me...

Yeah, for those of you in other parts of the world, West Michigan Wood Chucks have a shoulder height of about 2 feet, and weigh about 75-100lbs, and have huge teeth! They only look cute and cuddly! You don't want to hit these on your bike...they'd total your Bike, then they'd get up and  chew on you! Just kidding...they do bite though!

We've got them in GA too. At least in N. GA. They taste good. Real good. More flavor than rabbit. Much better than mongoose which tastes kind of like a mix between squirrel and frog.
