Valve cover removal question
« on: July 14, 2012, 04:01:54 PM »
I have looked around in the FAQ and tried to search but search doesn't seem to work or I am too stupid to figure it out. So here is my question:  can you remove the valve cover and replace the gasket without taking the engine out of the frame on a 76 model 750?  If I can that would sure save a bunch of work. Thanks in advance

Use the "Google custom search" upper-left.

I seem to recall some have done this engine-in,  but most pull the engine.

You cannot remove the head cover. But there are reports that the gasket can be changed, I have not tried.  Time for a frame kit.

Some have said you can change the gasket with the engine in the frame by removing the cover screws, raising the cover, taking the old gasket out, working the new one over the cover then underneath, then buttoning everything up.  What I haven't seen explained is how you can make sure all matching surfaces are clean for a good gasket seal, and in the process keep the stuff you are scraping off out of the engine.

No first hand knowledge but there was a thread I read by someone who did it and how. Essentially, you lift the cover as far as it will go, not much, and work the gasket into place. It the old one comes off poorly you'll have to scrape it in close quarters.

But sounds like its doable.

No doubt it is doable.  Probably would leak worse than the one replaced, tho.  The crud issue isn't addressed, either.

That's always the problem I've had with the idea.  I have no doubt it can be done, but how much time and effort would it take to do it correctly, and would that time and effort actually be less than if you pulled the engine and did it the standard way?

Trust me, any method that allows the gasket to be replaced without removing the engine can't possibly involve the work required to remove and reinstall the engine...  (Without cutting the frame.)
I had to change the valve cover gasket on my 750 a couple of months ago and I removed the engine to do so.
If I ever have to do it again I'll try damn near anything to avoid that hassle again! >:(

Interesting things to think about.  I haven't found a link on here that goes to the instructions on the frame mod.  there are threads with the link to the mod but I don't think they are working any more.
