Flaky ignition switch - CB750
« on: March 24, 2012, 04:57:43 PM »
My ignition switch has started to get twitchy. When I turn the ignition on, many times now the oil and neutral light don't come on until I wiggle the key back and forth. I don't see how to get inside these things to look for problems. Anyone know if it's possible to get inside to clean contacts?

yeah, take the switch off the bike.  pull back the rubber protecter on the back of the switch.  bend/pry 3 little dimples around the edge of the switch out.  the back plate with the wires soldered to it will come out.  it is spring loaded with little steel balls that will fall out, so watch what you are doing.  clean the contacts and put it all back together. enjoy a trouble free ignition switch.   hope that helps a little.

Thanks Jake. I'll try it this weekend. I love working with little spring loaded balls (Not!) This bike is loaded with little spring loaded balls, high beam, kill switch, blinkers, etc. I'm gonna take some pictures of this operation. How many balls and springs?

Got it. No balls, just two springs. Contacts were really bad so just cleaned them up and it's fine. Thanks for that. Here's my pictures.

Yeah it was easy once opened. A lot easier than a switch that's for sure. And it goes back together quickly too. And I'm sure there were no balls  8)

Looks like this is my next project -- cleaning the contacts in my ignition switch.  Hopped on for a ride the other day, turned the key and .... Nothing!  Tried several more times, still nothing.  pushed her back in the garage and poured a little.  Next morning, turned the key and ... All is well!  So far so good, but I don't want this to happen again while I'm on the road.
