K5 Controls?
« on: May 22, 2012, 01:02:59 PM »
Apologies if this has been answered before but I cannot get the search to work.

I'm the proud owner of a new (to me) '75 CB750.  The PO had a few accessories that didn't fit my style so I'm in the process of modifying some things.  Here's where I am today:

I'm having a really hard time finding the left and right controls for this bike.  I have the stock ones and they worked but I'm redoing all of the wiring I'd like to find a set with the original wires in them (these appear to be re-wired and i don't have much length to work with).

I've seen a few on eBay but none that say they will work on my K5.  So..

Are there any sources besides eBay for these controls?

Are there any threads that cover rebuilding these controls?

Can someone rebuild these for me?

Thanks in advance!

Left hand control should be the same for at least 73-76, I think. (72? had the buzzer off switch)
The correct '75 control is unique to that year in that it lacks the throttle "friction" adjust but still has an on/off switch for the headlight.
Toward the end of 75 they lose the on/off switch and the head light is always on.
I expect again that a 73-76 right hand control should work, some of the wires might be different colors.
For the best of everything I'd look for 73-74 controls.

Technically speaking...you can make any year's controls work on any CB750. The only shortcoming is in one particular combination where you can't ever turn off the headlight (K4/5/6 right side w/o ON-OFF switch, and has 1-wire START button), but even this can be fixed up with one of my relay kits.  ;)

The K4 built in the Old Factory had the ON-OFF switch on the right side, while the K3-K6 of the New Factory came with no ON-OFF switch at all. That's why we find both types today, and the wiring harnesses are the same: the New Factory bikes often have little White, Orange, Yellow, or Blue collars on Black, Brown, or Black-White wires to indicate the way they were patched together. You'll see these in the headlight buckets if you work on enough of them. ;)

Sure: that one is one of the late K4 and K5 types, most likely. If you install a small relay on the Yel/Red wire, it can drop out the headlight during START, which will help the battery. The START button in that one is more complex than the K2: you need to determine which of those BLACK wires is feeding it, and connect it to GREEN in the headlight instead of BLACK, to make the START solenoid turn on. Or, you can just follow the matching wire colors in the headlight, but reconnect the non-Yellow wire at the START solenoid to GREEN (under the seat is a spare GREEN) instead: either method will work fine. The KILL swithc is the same on both.way

Take a look in the Electrical Section: it details how to do what I described above.

So here's an update:

I installed a new harness from CB750 Supply (I think) and a right control from what looks to be from a K6.  My original K5 right control was the one with the headlight on/off switch.  The new one only has the run/off/run and a start button.  I should also mention I have aftermarket turn signals and an aftermarket taillight.  To my knowledge, everything else is stock.

I'm not sure where to plug in the wires from the K6 switch. The switch has RED/YELLOW, BLK/WHT, 2 BLACK, and a BLK/RED.  I've tried different combos but I'm getting the same result:

When I turn the key, the starter motor immediately turns on.  If I hold the starter button in then turn the key, my main fuse blows.

I've followed my Clymer manual for all of the other wiring.  I've inspected the ignition and fusebox and everything looks good.  I also cleaned the fuse clips.  I should also mention that the fuses I have are the correct amps (5, 7, 15) but they are longer than the originals.

Please let me know if I've left any critical information out... electrical is like black magic to me and I foolishly assumed it would be as easy as matching the colors up.  I wanna ride  :(

Any thoughts?

I have an on/off switch on the K5. Maybe came from another bike. Love that switch!
I don't have a motorcycle, sold it ('85 Yamaha Venture Royale).  Haven't had a CB750 for over 40 years.

I decided to rewire my K5 right hand control... The one with the headlamp on/off.  Everything on the bike appears to be wired corectly but I'm still having the same problem: when I turn the key to the first position, the starter starts cranking.

Anybody know what could be causing this?
