Rain? What's rain?
« on: July 14, 2012, 06:46:06 PM »
After months of no measurable precipitation, we got hammered today; 4 inches so far, and counting! During one very heavy 5 minute period, we got 1/2". :o (The pic was taken later, after it had slowed down some.)

Had some of it roll through here about 30 minutes ago. Lost a branch on one of trees. Now I don't need to cut that branch off. I have to trim 9 trees each year.
I don't have a motorcycle, sold it ('85 Yamaha Venture Royale).  Haven't had a CB750 for over 40 years.

I haven't been down to my shop since this afternoon, but there's a good possibility some water has gotten in, thanks to the stupid lack of engineering put into the recent road work the city has done. They raised the level of the road a foot above the floor level in the shop, then cut a 24" deep trench, and put an 18" culvert in front of my door. The net result is a funnel diverting water from the road surface into my door. I tried to explain to both the city guy and the contractor how the water needed to run, and the trench, nor the culvert were necessary, and might even cause more harm than good, but they did it anyway. Maybe now they will believe me....

This pic shows the "drive-way" they built leading to my shop door. I used to be able to park alongside the building, but can't now, thanks to the drainage "improvements". >:( This was taken before the last downpour.

Jesus yes we could use rain in Wiarton and the rest of Southern Ont the talking heads are stating to talk about crop losses because of lack of moisture and I know we've had to water the garden a lot this summer.

We have flash flooding here in Sierra Vista in several of the canyons below the Monument Fire last summer. Current downpour is tremendous for the past half hour here in town where i live.  Can't imagine what some of the canyons look like if the much rain fell on the Huachuca mountains where the fire was...

From what I've heard on the news, all parts of AZ have gotten somewhat hammered by the rain. We got another 1" yesterday, in a short amount of time, but only a few drops today. Spent a few hours today digging some of the new road out of my front yard... >:(

Only a few drops here today after 8 days of rainfall. Kept the temps cooler, it was odd seeing other (northern) parts of the country hotter than here.

Places near got 2" or better but traces here. Now they say there will no longer be many 10% rain's,   just heat in place and accumulating into a dome.

We didnt have any rain for over a month here in Joplin MO. Hot and dry. I had 50 miles on my upper end redo and the cycle was in pristine shape as in cleanliness. Then I got caught in a half hour downpour following the debris packed job of the MODOT ditch mowers for 10 miles. Holy crap, my chrome was something outta roadwarrior and had grass and weed clippings everywhere. Murphy was ridin with me.

My grass is crisp for the third summer in a row. I have in ground sprinklers in the front but I only spot water the back.  We were spoiled by a few mild years, i'm thinking of putting AC in the garage so I can get something done.

Shenanigans, hope your house or apartment is higher than your street...
similar pics in this part of AZ also.  What a lot of people from other areas dont understand about the AZ desert is that is typical for much of our desert in the SW because at least in SW AZ the soil has a calcium carbonate that makes the ground about a foot down like concrete for several inches to a foot. Thus, the water does not soak into the ground very fast and as a result you get the erosion and run off and flash flooding.  Many of the so called rivers in AZ only have water in them after a heavy rain or during monsoon season.

Well, we have finally gotten some decent rain, the best kind, nice long drizzle for the last 36 hours actually. So far 1.5" of good soaking rain and the possibility of more before the low moves off to the east. I wish the mid-west farm belt would get some, they need it more than we do.

Problem for the farmers crops that don't have irrigation is if it passes the window where the plants/crop needs it it stunts development and yield sometimes irrepairably. Stock up on canned goods now, they will only skyrocket when yields are terrible in harvest.
