Clean chain?
« on: July 18, 2012, 06:08:13 AM »
Ok, are there any drawbacks to cleaning the main drive chain? When should it be replaced vs cleaned up? Once clean what should be used to lubricate it?

Thanks!

Aaron

May depend on the type of chain. Is it plain, sealed or what?

I graduated, recently, to RK x-ring chain and I clean it with a Grunge Brush and Kerosene. I lube it while hot with chain wax. Seems to work OK.

Clean up with kerosene and lube with any of the readily available chain lubes in the spray cans.  I like bel ray chain wax.  doesnt fling off and make a mess.  does leave a white residue on the chain though

We do need to know if ORing or not.

Kero is best for ORing, don't use stronger stuff like gas as it attacks the ORIngs.

Replace? My best test is: On the centerstand in neutral; push up on the bottom row of the chain to take out all slack; with thumb and forefinger grasp the chain at 3:00 Oclock on the rear sprocket. Grasp it at a pin. Pull away from the sprocket. If you cna see daylight, time for a new one.

All the dif chain waxes mentioned are the best for ORing chains. Something else for non-oring.

Aaron, what type of scooter you got? If it's a 750, consider getting an x-ring. Night and day difference.
