Summary of differences - 1976, 1977, 1978
« on: July 16, 2012, 07:00:52 PM »
Hi all,

Has anyone put together a list of the differences between the model years for the Hondamatic?

I've got a '76 next to a '77, and am seeing all kinds of things that were changed for '77 --

Frame
Triple-clamp top / ignition switch shroud
Wire loom
parking brake
battery box
etc.

Does this site have any place set aside to show pictures of the differences?

The '76 had a mish-mash of parts from other bikes when I got it, and I'm trying to make it more true to stock.
I'd like to see a picture of the face of a pilot  gauge from a '76 to compare to the '77.
Was the chain size the same?
Were the DID alloy wheels the same?
...so many questions....

I've gone to the Western Honda site and looked at the fiches, and noticed all sorts of part number changes, but the fiches don't show what a real color photo does.

This thread could be that list!

Wheels - spokes in 1976 and 1977; Comstars in 1978.

Sprockets - 1976 differs from 1977 and 1978 (which are the same).
Plugs - 1976 differs from 1977 and 1978 (which are the same).
Gear indicator - 1976 and 1977 are the same (L for low and D for drive), 1978 differs (1 and 2).
Chain - 1977 and 1978 were o-ring, 1976 was not.

Handlebars - 1977/78 have higher bars then 76, cables are different length.

1977/78 uses a speed warning unit on the throttle opener
1976 uses a fork mounted brake switch, 77/78 is mounted on master cylinder
The Seat has a strange grabrail built in the 1976 model.

1976 kick start lever is unique to 76.  However, the 77/78 kick start lever will fit all three years.

more to come . . . .

My 78 pointed to the center of the bike, until I put a new aftermarket one on.

Carb.s: The bowl vents are all connected and have a breather tube that is attached to the top of the air box on the 78s. On the 77 I worked on for a friend each carb had a vent on the side of the casting.
