CB350-Running strange on left cylinder
« on: June 26, 2006, 01:31:51 PM »
last week my bike started to bog down and want to die during the first 1/8-1/4 turn of the throttle.. ive had similar problems which turned out to be gummed up carbs causing ristricted movement of the needle piston.
so i pulled the cards and gave them a good cleaning a few days ago.. problem still there!
so then i tried manually opening each carb to see if both sides of the engine were running the same..
the right side sounds and runs excellent.. but when i lift up on the left side throttle attachment, it sounds horrible. if i lift up very slowly it doesnt really studder, but doesnt sound good..  if i lift up fast itll really bog down and the engine will shut off..
i adjusted timing two weeks ago so i dont think that is the problem, although it could be if something migrated. i do not currently have a timing gun to check..

now to my suspicion...  me and a buddy rebuilt the top end two weeks ago which has lead to a pretty nasty oil leak.. it is leaking out from where the points attach to the engine.. he seems to think that the leak is due to a bad cam seal..
i dont know if a bad cam seal on the left side could lead to piss-poor performance on that side as well.. but it is the only thing i can think of..

does anybody have any ideas? ???  :-\

What do you mean by "sounds horrible"?  Since you rebuilt the top-end recently, I'd suspect the problem may be an extension of that procedure, but I'm curious what kind of sound you are hearing.

Need to do a compression test on the left cylinder to determine if that is the problem, I just found my compression tester.  Otherwise, the spark plug might just be dirty.  Maybe oil leaking from the cam seal is getting on the points for cylinder #1?  Clean the gap with rubbing alcohol to check.  Are the carbs synchronized?  If it's not raining tomorrow (today?) give me a call and we shall investigate.
