DSS Electronic Ignition.
« on: July 17, 2012, 04:59:40 am »
I've not noticed this kit on their site before today, but is anyone running this ignition from DSS spares?

Looks like corrosion just waiting to happen with all that exposed electronics. Does it really cost that much to encase it in something waterproof? That's one reason I went with the Dyna S.

I believe this unit is made in Germany . I think member Nippon deals these in the US . I've seen a knock off as well . In addition to what Duanob said I'm not sure the environment under the points cover is a great place to put electronic components due to the heat present there . For this reason I like Hondaman's unit which locates the electronics someplace cooler . Boyer bransden also does this by putting the pickup coils only inside the cover . Many electronic ignitions to choose from these days .

They could have a conformal coating on them which is basically clear.  All of the circuit cards I deal with are coated in it.

Had one of these in my 500-4 for 5 years without any  problems.   tms.ve run the bike up and down the Stuart Hiway (Darwin~Alice ) a couple of times and buzz around Darwin all the time.. .I had a look at it last weekend and it looks fine no sign of heat distress

I might just give it a go Dave, no drama about setting the timing for two, it looks like pickups are 180ยบ apart.
Built in timing light for static setting too it seems.

check it at full advance with a timing light though and adjust it if it falls short or goes over.

I beg your pardon, my points don't stink. They have a fine, mysterious scent. If you must buy this, make sure the cover has a good seal.

Frosty, I'm real happy with the Hondaman ignition unit also. It sits out of the way, has gotten great reviews from forum members uniformly, and it'll save you some significant coin as well.

I appreciate what you're saying there Coach & with no disrespect to Hondaman's system, I'm looking to get away from the geometry puzzle to get both sets of points set to the same gap & have the timing correct on both sets at the same time. I'm not certain if po changed the points plate at some stage, but grrrrrr.
I've read about shimming the base plate to correct this problem, but it shouldn't have to be that hard. I can remember a post here about a member having the same issue even with the Dyna kit when he couldn't get enough advance on 2 & 3.

Frosty.... 'prolly a bent points cam shaft causing 2-3 not to set per specs. Putting an electronic on there won't fix that  ;)

Oh goody, another points VS electronic ignition thread slowly forming, where's TT?  ::)
I was feeling sorry for myself because I couldn't afford new bike boots, until I met a man with no legs.

So I said, "Hey mate, you haven't got any bike boots you don't need, do you?"

+1 on the shaft.  Had this happen a week ago and I could not get 2,3 to go to full advance.  Hondaman helped me out on this one.  Making sure that shaft is true is key.

As for the whole points vs electronic it does not make a whole lot of difference if your engine is in tune.  My 73 cb750 pulls like a freight train with points.  It also has a fresh top end and a serdi valve job.
