OK we're both right.
In my experience with bikes that have been sitting up...
12 in the past year. 4 SOHC Hondas. only four have failed comp test and two have required teardown. One had two bent valves(likely from PO overachieving), one had a badly scored cylinder(likely from PO putting in a helicoil without removing the head). All four were way off on valve clearance. Fixed a buds bike recently that had a stick chain tensioner. A SOHC twin. Valves were pushing camshaft around enough to drop compression to 60lb range.

IMO this is turning into a good thread because we're articulating, albeit in a recursive manner, two different approaches to diagnostics and repair. Maybe when we're done you could condense into a 'HOW TO'. In exchange, I'll concede top billing ;-)

Have to visit the doc again today, ouch. I suspect he's running a dog food business on the side with all the meat he's been cutting off. Will see about getting some additional stuff typed up this evening or tomorrow. If there is already a FAQ on tools, diagnostics, and repair that has a clear format, we might just look at modding that.

What say?

I been watching the new posts on this, and I got to say even though your dissagreeing with each other I am learning a few more things, as for the bike I have cleaned and dressed the points and did a few other things, now she still will not idle and she will not run with the choke pushed in, But she will sit their and run with the choke out and me feeding her gas, she will also accelerate real slow when I turn the throttle, so next even though these carbs supposed to be rebuilt, I am going to take them back off and look at them to see if anything is wrong, One thing she isn't backfiring anymore since I dressed the points, One is better then none I guess, As for this bikes history, I got this from a 77 year old dude who parked it in 1997, I asked him why he parked it and he can't remember, he said I think it might have been the battery or the brakes, Well the bike has no brakes whatsoever, I guess I got to rebuild the masters, But I will address that one when I ever get her running right, But as far as the help from you guys I really appreciate it, and I will keep you informed after I take off the carbs to see if I can find anything, Bikes are rough If this was a car I think I would have shot her already. I could probably make a small fortune if I tore her down and sold her piece by piece, but I don't really want to do that. I'm a guy who refuses to get beat by a machine, sooner or later(probably later) I'll get her to run, Thank You Guys Again.

mustang,i have not been following this thread too close,so if i mention something already mentioned please excuse me.since your bike has been sitting since 1997,you must remove and clean every jet in those carbs, including the slow jet and emulsion tubes.my bike gets cantakerous after it sits for a month,i can imagine what 9 years has done to it.hang in there, you`ll get it.

Ok guys how about this, Like I said I bought these carbs already rebuilt, so I figured that everything would be right, WRONG... So I take off all the bowls and check the floats, I look at the float on no2 bowl and shes just stuck up in the air, so I take the pin out, low and behold the pin is bent causing the float to stick, so I bend it back and sand it with some fine grit paper, it took me awhile to sand her so she would fit in just right, but all the floats are working now, These carbs are rebuilt, the insides of the bowls and all the jets are super clean, I did notice that the acc pump was a little rough and it was also missing the o ring so I purcahsed a new one, I haven't got her back together yet, but something is telling me she might run this time, Again Thanks for your help, Hopefully I get her back together tomorrow.

While you have the carbs off and apart, it wouldn't hurt to inspect the jets. A good trick for checking float needle seal is to turn them upside down and blow in the inlet using a bit of tubing or hose. You can hear if it leaks and by lifting the float tell the point at which the needle opens to pass fuel. Lift and lower a few times to make sure it seals consistantly.

I have to say when your right your right, I like a stupid jerk put the carbs back on, and what did I get, she run better but still wouldn't run with the choke off, she still wouldn't idle either, so off they come again, i check everything again, this time I pull the slow jets, and they are completely clogged, I am telling you if you looked at these carbs you would swear they were brand new, buy anyway I cleaned the slow's with a piece of speaker wire and some carb spray, and  finally I could see the light, I put the carbs back on fire her up and she kicks right in,, no choke and she sits and idles, she runs pretty good even without the airbox on, So I tip my hat to all of you for your help, and I should have did what you told me in the first place"to see the light" sure would have saved alot of uneccessary work, as for the people I paid  for a rebuild, I have a few choice words for them, Pretty them all up on the outside to cover whats inside, Well live and Learn I guess, Thanks Again,
