Valve Adjustment Question

Before i adjust my valves i had a couple of questions.  The manual says too set the clearance to .05mm, or .002in.  My feeler gauges don't have this measurement but they are close .063mm, and .0023in.

Is this is not that great of a difference and ok to use ?   

Secondly, this seems like a paper thin clearance, and my valves seem to be way up from this, could they really be that far out of adjustment? I don't want to start cranking them down till i get some clarification. Mine do ressemble the picture in the manual. So do i take the measurement from the back of the tappet (this is the round piece correct?)

From what i read and see in the shop manual you are supposed to take the measurement from between the top of the valve and the round piece that sits on top of it correct?

The feeler gauge you have should be OK.  I always try to err on the side of too much clearance as I am concerned about full valve closure if I should get too tight.  Make sure you follow the instructions on proper rotation of the motor to sequence the adjustment.  Take the plugs out and you can easily turn the motor with the 22 mm nut behind the points cover.  Double check the valve clearance after tightening the nut on the adjuster as sometimes the gap is altered by the tightening process.

So am i correct that the measurement should be taken from the back of the tappet, or the part closest to the top of the valve ?  ???

Yes, they can be that far out.  incorrect setting.  lock nut loosening, etc.  be sure you are TDC before adjusting.  the 'tap' of 1 intake/exhaust is so slight, you might miss it if you are ham-handed.  remember, if in spec, the up and down movement is only .05mm.

FWIW - I tried using automotive ones, bending them, etc... and it sucked.

Ok thanks for the info guys, that helps, but im still not 100% on where to take the measurement from...  sorry... damn rookies, i know.
