16" rear rim with TAS SS spokes...help? (picts)
« on: July 21, 2012, 04:36:11 AM »
All the straight spokes (installed first) don't seem to want to fully seat at the hub (the bent spokes are better though).  Another issue I noticed was the straight spoke nipples needed to be screwed much further down the spoke until they seated in the rim (is this normal?)  Everything pictured is just a bit tighter than 'finger tight'.

Can't seem to get an answer from TAS, but from what I can tell, it matches the lace patterns I've found on here.  What'cha think?

Half the spokes must enter the hub flange from outside. The way they cross is now all wrong, the spokes must not be forced to bend around each other: this causes abrasion and creates a stress concentration point - they will fail at the cross eventually. With spokes from opposite sides you have clearance at the crossing so they do not touch.
Other than that there's at least something wrong with the tightening. All spokes should have the same amount of thread showing - not much at all. Loosening the long ones and then tightening the short ones will rotate the wheel relative to the hub I think and even them out, but you still have to start over and get the spokes alternating in-out on the hub flanges. On first look the lacing pattern seems wrong - too open - but I'm not familiar with putting a tiny rim on these hubs.

The kits from TAS are all inside spokes. His wheel is OK, or at least the idea of all insides is OK. This is not uncommon or at least is was not when I was doing them years ago.

the TAS kits also required some grinding on the threaded end of the spokes, also not uncomon. However, this seems excessive in this case and i would try a different combo of lacing. You should end up with only a few of the spokes needing grinding.

There have been many threads on this. Here's one with many more links stuffed inside. What i learned was that though i thought all 16" conversion kits were insides only, most are inner / outer, and some are inners only. So i learned something.

Still the TAS kits it seems are of the inner only variety.

If you click thru the link into other links you will find pictures of wheels both ways.

Another on the TAS kit in particular with a finished wheel picture.

Personally, now that I know the Inner/outer option is available, I would go that route. Or better yet, no 16" at all.  ;)  (not my thing)

But the all inside pattern does exist and works for for many, never heard of a failure.

TAS $29 spokes on a 16" CRC 16x3 rim.
I don't have a motorcycle, sold it ('85 Yamaha Venture Royale).  Haven't had a CB750 for over 40 years.

YW!  Yea, it was what, a year or two later that I realized that I hijacked that thread. :P
