1977 cb750 Questions
« on: July 19, 2012, 08:39:26 AM »
Hello all- My name is Zack from Durham, NC. I just posted an introduction into the newbie folder.

I am not new to motorcycles, but I am to cb750s. I just picked up a mostly 1977 cb750 (engine and tank) with a question mark for a frame. It has a frame number of CB75020032 on the title which I cannot match anywhere. That is also the number stamped (possibly re-stamped) into the frame. The person I picked up the bike from says it's a 76. Any ideas?

Also, clubmans were put on which I am used to and they do not touch the tank. Trouble is your hands will get in between the bars and tank when turning sharply (like while parking). Does anyone have a solution to this?

The tank was also a little loose and I noticed that it was not mounted to anything, just resting on the frame. There is a broken rubber piece near the seat. Is the tank only attached by this, or should it be bolted on?

Lastly, are there any differences between how a seat or tank mounts to the later frames (76 vs. 77 etc)?

The gas tank has two rubber mounts in the front. One on each side of the frame.
There is a rubber piece at the rear and the sheet metal bracket fits inside of that rubber
piece. NO bolts! No screws.

With a rubber mounted tank the tank cannot get broken mounts that cause the tank to leak. less vibration of the tank and gas. That tank mounting was an innovation at that time and is still used by many motorcycles to this day.

That CB750 had so many innovations for its time.

Rubber mounted gas tanks.
Color coded wiring harnesses.
Disc brakes.
Electric start.
A tool kit that did not require tools to get into. (Unlike the 2004 Kawasaki 1500) LOL.lol.
Transverse 4 cylinder engine.
Easy to work on.
Passenger seat that does not have the passengers A$$ way up in the air. No dignity.
Alternator instead of generator.
Center stand AND side stand.
kick start.

BTW... The solution for your handlebars are "super bike bars" from Cycle-X.

No pinched hands, no sore neck and wrists.

Thanks for your information. This thing is starting to make more sense.

I think I have the clubmans angled well and I love clubmans. No soreness for me really.

If I remove the Honda badges I should not get my hands pinched.

Welcome. I do not understand the VIN number issue. You state that number is on the title and the frame?
Can you post pics?   A lot of these old Hondas were manufactured in one year and titled the next (when sold). So maybe you have a '76?
'74 "Big Bang" Honda 750K [836].....'76 Honda 550F.....K3 Park Racer!......and a Bomber!............plus plus plus.........

Here's the chart:
http://www.sohc4.net/index.php/serialnumbers/
Your number given in your post is not long enough. There should be a VIN plate rivetted on to the rightside of the steering head on the frame. Its VIN number should match the VIN number stamped into the left side of the steering head.

As mentioned the year of title may be different than the year of manufacture depending on when it was actually sold.
