1978 cb750f no oil on right side valves
« on: July 18, 2012, 06:05:09 PM »
so I bought my bike about a month ago and this past week i took it for a ride and on the way back I started hearing valve noise and it started running bad off and on, so I dropped it off at a shop feeling relativly confident that the valves just needed adjustment, however they called me today sayint that they did the valve adjustment  but that the right side of the engine was not getting oil to the valves.  I am lost , any ideas?

The little oil jets under the cam tower are clogged up. It will kill the cam and half the rockers if you don't catch it in time.

As Big jay says...

Wasthe engine worked on before you got it? How many miles have you puton it?

usually those jets, or just the right side jet perhaps, get clogged with debris after a rebuild. Especially wicked is silicone gasket sealer. It hardens up, flakes off and travels like an embulism to the jet, clogs it, that side seizes and the cam twists in half.

Personal experience. Many here have suffered the same fate.

I've never heard of one clogging up that hadn't been recently worked on.

I have put at most 100 miles on it.   I will let the shop know tomorrow.  Hopefully i am not too late.   Do they still sell new cams for this bike?

Yes, but was it just recently rebuilt before you put the 100 miles on it. Or has someone else been riding it?

You can't get new cams from Honda, but good used ones are plentiful and almost stock, mild to super hot performance cams are available new.

I couldn't say, I bought it from a guy who had not owned it very long, and the odometer only shows 10000, but again who knows if that odometer is legit.

Ah, mistery meat. Let us know what the verdict is. The odo could be legit. It won't tell us if someone was in the motor recently or not.

Ok, looks like the parts that hold down the cam have issues, and two screws backed out, but of course they told me they cannot remove the valve cover all the way without either removing the engine or part of the frame.  I thought this was only needed to remove the head.....
anyway who sells the frame kit so I can remove the top of the frame?

Well, the valve cover sits on top of the head, and it must come off first, which it can't as they say, without removing the engine. You can get the "Gordon frame kit" from forum members, but I'm not sure who. Do a search. Requires welding so the shop where its at should have someone qualified or you'll need to haul it around.

Carpy has a kit and CycleX have a kit. Neither of which require welding, but they are not as robust and overall cool as the Gordon kit.

You would cut the frame rails as prescribed, with the cam stripped off, you'll have enough room to install any one of the kits, then finish the reassembly.

thanks, someone volunteered to sell me a gordon kit!!
I also got a peek under the cover and there are loose fasteners in there and the tree that holds the cam shaft does look like it might be cracked, and there was tons of sludge in there.  So I forsee tons of work ahead.....
anyone know where I could get a picture of a frame with the gordon kit installed?
