Frame paint color
« on: July 22, 2012, 05:53:18 am »
I want to repaint a few small items like my headlight bucket, footpeg mounts, kickstand etc. Anybody know of a close rattle can match? I'll probably repaint frame (and above mentioned items) one if these days, so I'm just looking for something to look decent until then.

A generic gloss black wont do? Maybe a semi gloss if you dont want it 'too new' looking.

It very well may work. Is there not enough difference between different manufacturers black to make too much of a difference?

There are differences.
If you use Duplicolor paint (NAPA stores) the two part clear in a special spray can is compatible with the duplicolor brand.

also if you cant wait I have used VHT Semigloss black caliper paint from local autopart stores with great success. It is fuel and solvent resistant and holds up really well. Hope that helps- also it has been my experience that you should never consider "appliance epoxy" it is horrible horrible stuff stay far far away-

I read that if you have it PC'd, it will need to be an 80% gloss. It may have been HM that said that.
I don't have a motorcycle, sold it ('85 Yamaha Venture Royale).  Haven't had a CB750 for over 40 years.

Eastwood Chassis Black is real close to stock. Duplicolor semi-gloss engine enamel is a good, cheaper alternative for frame parts. Duplicolor Universal Black looks good on headlight buckets, especially if you clear it.

Rust oleum gloss black, let dry overnight, rub with 0000 steel wool and then lightly oil with a rag.  This blends the touch up into the surrounding area.
36 years of this stuff, here to help.

When I was looking at vht caliper paint, I saw they had a chassis paint in satin and gloss. Would regular rustolem be chemical resistant? Center stand always cruded up with oil, don't want to repaint often.

The best match I have found so far is satin black.  It is great for touch up areas and small parts.  Gloss will show all the imperfections in the metal.  Satin hides some of it.  I have a bunch of before and after pics I can share if you send me an e-mail request.  The pics are too high of resolution to post here.

Almost any brand satin spray paint will do just fine.

One note: if you doing frame touch up in a highly visible area you may have to use gloss.  Try a spot with satin first and then make your decision

I use VHT gloss & satin Black. I've been happy with both. Imho, the VHT gloss is a very close match to the original black.
It's not too glossy.
