I got my airbrush chops with candy painting lexan model car bodies - both small and complex and not the least bit of fun. really got to see where I was not paying attention. When kit RC cars were popular in the 80's and 90's (and I was a kid) I would buy tons of clear bodies at swap meets for next to nothing from people who got in over their heads with their kits.

Ok so you guys are not going to believe what I am about to tell you. A few post back I mentioned that I was going to seek out a flake guru and pick his brain on painting metal flake. Not only did he know his stuff, he also had a 10 second CB750 back in the day! It gets even better he personally knew Russ Collins! His bike had a monster 1000cc RC kit and a head by Jerry Branch of Branch Flowmetrics!

He keep giving me one tip after another and all he wanted was to show me the picture of his drag bike. He went through his album, but couldn't find it. This guy has been painting bikes for years. He pulled out some micro silver flake and described in detail how to make it work and I knew I came to the right place. He must have talked to me for what seemed like forever about painting.

As far as guns he originally used a bottom feed siphon gun for flake, and the trick is to have a marble or ball bearing in there to keep the flake mixed up and prevent clumping.

It does not get any better than this. Everyone else I have talked to says they don't do candy. Not only does this guy do it he did it back in the day, and was willing to share his years of experience with me.

great job but you reall should have "cut" it after final coat. It may look good to you but I can see the smallish orange peel in your pics and usually that means it is much greater in real life. a 1000 grit wetsand and a good machine buff and glaze will fool everyone into thinking it is a $1000 job instead of a $40 special.

yeah , i mentioned it had a slight orange peel. i sold that bike and am building a new one. when i paint it, ill do the same then ill wet sand it, then do a medium and fine cut on it. The next one will be even better for sure.

I still have those tank stripes ya sold me. Hoping to put them to good use this fall using the Duplicolor. I'll let you know how they turn out. Show some pics of your up coming paint job when its done with the different base color. Interested to see how it comes out.

Sounds good, fyi the stripes you have are not the ones that can stick on and off as described up top. (i think) yours you will have to use soap water, and you can move them around. then squeegy it. let me know if you have any probs, i can get you another set.

Thanks guys I think I am getting much closer. Today I sprayed some Rustoluim metallic sliver on some old table legs since just about any bright sliver will work. I then used a detail siphone feed gun from Harbor Freight with a marble to keep the mini flake from clumping.

The metallic paint looks good on its own as can be see in the 4th pic, but a quick shot of interbase clear and metal flake 1 gram per oz really provided a good match with the original. This is the way to go IMHO I like how easy it is and this clear / flake combo seems to work great.

Today was the first time I used an interclear like DBC500 and it goes on as good as everyone says.

The only problem I had was trying to get the right color orange. The original tank is a little faded making it look more gold than orange, but if you look under the tank trim you can see the original orange color.

Yeah, right bling, bling. Maybe I'll use them for a work bench or bar instead. Either way I am having lots of fun learning how to paint. The intercoat clear goes on much better than the cheap duplicolor lacquer.

You can get generic version of PPG products from the coating store on Ebay. They sell a generic DBC500 and a Medium Grade Reducer which is just a a 50/50 mix that goes on really smooth.

HOK tangerine and Roth Metal flake is also available in a can and you can probably get similar results. You will need to call Rothmetalflake to order this as it is so new. For me adding 1 gram per ounce over a silver metallic base worked great. You can always spray a second time, but if you have too much flake to start it will stack up and look like the tank in the first pic.

stevensons1 on Ebay sells on HOK concentrate in smaller sizes which really helps out if you are experimenting 2oz is only $11 dollars and should be enough to paint a tank and side covers.

Lester, hope your paint comes soon.

Next is to paint an actual tank so I can better see how the candy looks in the light. The table legs are so uniform that it is not so easily to compare to the original.

Like Lester I am now waiting on paint this time a silver base coat. I used rustoleum metallic just for practice. I think I will do a step by step start to finish starting with primmer to clear coat. Should be alot of fun. Been putting the whole paint thing off for some time and now I am finding out it's not that bad. Persistence is key.

Does anyone have any good tips on filling in small dings? I got 5 all with some dings here or there no big dents though. Any pointers or things to avoid would be greatly appreciated.

Nothing special about small dings, treat them like any other. I would recommend some fine finishing filler that comes ready mixed in tubes. Great for filling tiny scratches and blemishes.

Quality filler makes a difference. Marglass is good stuff, Bondo is terrible.

There is an extra surcharge to post from England to Ireland. This would add another 30% on to the total. I can't justify that. On to plan q.

I am the same way can't stand to pay sky high charges for shipping. Plan Q? Must tough getting paint where you are if you have went through half the letters in the Alaphabet.

Ok after a week of sanding and striping I got the 1st coat of primer on them and just as I was finishing up the UPS truck showed up with my base coat. Hopefully I will be shooting this today or tomorrow.

Plan Q is now in action. I aerosoled some silver over my tank to keep the rust away. Waiting on paint is holding me back from other things. I'll worry about paint after I get this baby back on the road.

Ok so after a bunch of pictures of table legs and lamp shades just kidding we got some tanks and side covers and they are O so orange. I wish I could say I am thrilled, but I am a little disappointed that I didn't stick the landing 1st try. That and I dropped the right side cover after appalling the flake. What a bummer. In fact the first two were more about learning how to use the spray gun.

After watching the HOK video I got it stuck in my head I had to follow the contours of the tank. We'll this did not work out so good and the first two got big time runs. On the third I keep the gun parallel to the side of the tank then moved and sprayed the front. If I didn't move I had a hard time keeping the distance equal and a run would be the result

I discovered this when I painted my side cover and they look great! By stopping at the end of the front of the tank and moving and squiring up this problem went away.

The other problem I ran into is the silver metallic really flows great which is good, but you need to keep moving. Going from priming to this wonderful silver metallic is like going from sludge to 2% milk.

When shooting the base and candy you got to keep moving stop the gun for 1/2 second you will have a run.

The good news is I got a tank that looks half way decent and is a close match to the original non faked color of the sunrise orange. For me I like the colors to really pop. You know you did things right when it's orange in the shade and lights up brilliantly in the sun.

Hard to believe just a couple weeks ago I started out with something that looks like an orange disco ball (last pic).

Wish I could help, but I used up the last of my EBC-500 will have to order more from the coating store.
