Seat trim help ?
« on: June 25, 2006, 10:04:51 AM »
Got my seat re-done and it looks a little fat. I'm thinking a strip aluminium around the edge would help it look better.  Anybody know where to get something like that?  Self-stick might work, but I'm thinking of some channel-like thing with moveable tab/bolt combo that would go through pre-drilled holes around the edge.

I saw that, but am suspicious. How long have you used it? I'm afraid it would get gooey in the sun and start coming off.  Maybe even leave a yicky residue that's hard to get off- a fate worse than death.

Do you love yours?

My dad has that stick on stuff from the auto parts store as the trim on his Rickman's Gustafsson windscreen. (on a 550f, of course) And it hasn't come off yet - from rain, sun, etc.

Ever try Goof Off? (http://www.valspar.com/val/resident/goof-off.jsp)

Or Goo Gone? (http://www.magicamerican.com/googone.shtml)

There are others too; I just thought of those off the top of my head.

cheers, will

Well, it was $9.99 for enough to do about 3 tanks worth.....i have to say it does look exactly like the stock trim, i just took an hours ride in 90 degree heat and its still there, had it on for a couple of weeks now, no problems. There are varying amounts of thickness, so for the tank trim i had to look at a few places before i found the right thickness. I showed it to a friend of mine who is into vintage bikes and he thought for sure it was the original trim, and was very surprised when i showed him it was plastic. I would say thumbs up.

some art supply shops sell aluminum edge trim for poster/print edging various thicknesses, usually made to fit over a chunk of cardboard/poster/ glass.  Also home stores sell sluminum edge trim for carpet and tile edging, and for trim on wall coverings. many different styles and thicknesses, also lots of colors most stores only carry gold, silver, or black anodized, but other colors out there. I use a lot of it on different  projects for trim and such.

ken.

Finally figured out what you guys are talking about.
I'm talking about straight pieces for the side.  Cars from the '50s/'60s had them- about 3/4 to an inch wide, the skirted fenders on old Indians had them along the crease of the fenders- about 1/4", maybe 3/16".  I seem to remember that '70s era Beemer seats had them... off to check a BMW supply.
