Are VIN numbers on titles taken from the engine or from the frame on 50's and 60's harley davidson bikes?

The name of the company is H-D MOTOR Company.........no frame numbers until the gov made them do it in the '70s. Some early frames do have numbers but were added by the dealers.

Awesome. So I guess if you have a titled engine you can throw it into any aftermarket frame without issues.
