This seems unusual to me, how about you.
« on: July 24, 2012, 05:18:55 PM »
My 77 CB750F was on it's center stand in the garage and I came home from work one day to find it laying on it's side. Now, neither my wife nor the kids (they're too small to knock it over anyway) will fess up to it, but that's not the strange part. I picked it back up and noticed a couple days later it was leaving a trail of oil in my garage. Upon closer inspection, there's a nice dent at the left side crank case and the round cover plate. I am admittedly a noob to the vintage bike world, but I've seen plenty of (newer) bikes fall over without doing this kind of damage. Does seem right to you guys? I appreciate any thoughts or wisdom you all may be able to share. Oh, and my next question is going to be, where can I find replacement parts  ;)

Thanks,

If it was on the centre stand when it fell over I could easily see that damage being caused. 750's aren't light and it was quite a way off the ground.
How it managed to come off the centre stand I've no idea. It maybe a good idea to check the stand for corrosion or other anomalies.
'Then' and 'than' are completely different words and have completely different meanings. Same with 'of' and 'have'. Set and sit. There, their and they're. Draw and drawer. Could care less/couldn't care less. Bought/brought FFS.

It cannot fall off its center stand unless it was on mud.

It got knocked over or pushed forward off of the stand.

That side case new is $260 at least.

Do not start the engine until you take the case off and make sure the rotor or stator is not damaged.

I just looked on Ebay and there is no alternator cases for sale right now.

I would put my money on the kids fooling around. I hope they learned their lesson.

That is why they sell those engine guards.
I better get one of those too. My side cover is brand new OEM.

I've given up trying to figure out how, I was more confounded by the damage done, seems excessive to me, but if that's what it's gonna be it's gonna be that.  I appreciate the feedback!

No worries about trying to start it, I'm in a (very) slow process of a small restoration so it's going to be next summer before I have it on the road again. If I can't locate a good used one, anyone have a suggestion on where to buy new? (Lucky?)

I just Googled it and there are several on Ebay under this description!
"honda cb750 stator cover" Like $119,$129 etc.,.

Some are sold with the stator which is a bonus. If the stator is good.
You can go on line to Randy's cycle service and he has a video on how to check your stator or you can use the Clymer's manual.

Just a tip.

Park the bike next to a wall or something. Wall or something on the left side.
That way it cannot fall very far.
In my garage I put some big wood blocks on one side and wall on the otherside, so if there is a quake  then the bike cannot fall more than 45ยบ

Alternator covers can be found on ebay almost constantly.  (Honda also still sells them new for considerably more.)
Here's one now.
http://www.ebay.com/itm/1978-HONDA-CB750-ALTERNATOR-STATOR-WITH-COVER-AND-WIRES-/200781419608?pt=Motorcycles_Parts_Accessories&hash=item2ebf815458&vxp=mtr

$45

Or a forum member here probably has one they will sell if you post in the Parts Wanted section.

The cover is the same for all years.

If the crack isn't too bad it can also be sealed with epoxy too.

Mine had similar damage from the PO... repaired by the PO with good ol' JB Weld.
I've had to re-repair it (same way) once and that lasted a couple of years.
It's time to re-repair again... that and the big hole by the sprocket.
I plan on replacing this winter... They are out there though .. post on the "Parts Wanted" section ...

I'd happily pay $45 for it.

Well it's an exact replacement then!  ;)

No, I didn't see that obviously but my point is the same,  other, GOOD used alternator covers are on ebay every day.
A good one can found for a reasonable price especially if you're not in a hurry. :)

oh yeah and the falling off the centerstand..
Could have been a minor earth quake...
Wasn't there an issue with Fracking or deep well pumping of Fracking chemicals causing that out there?
It takes a lot to push it off it's CS. ..........If it's on solid flat ground.

Hmmm......

Well, Lucky does have a point about the case guards. I have a low-profile set on my bike. Just in case......

Heh, I'm way ahead of you on that one. There aren't any other marks on the bike, no impact marks, no other dents, no finger prints or toys. It's an anomoly.
