77 CB550K Rear Hub Disassembly
« on: July 24, 2012, 10:41:00 AM »
Hey guys, I have searched the forums and internet high and low, but can't find the answer to this.

I am in the process of getting my wheels and hubs ready to take to the powder coater and have ran into a bit of a hang up.  On the rear wheel hub, it appears as if the hub should be able to break down even farther.  You can see in the picture the line that became visible as I started to clean and remove the years of built up grease (on the top photo).   Can I take it to the powdercoater in it's current state of disassembly , or do I need to disassemble it even farther?  If so what am I missing.  I have stared at schematic after schematic but can't seem to identify how it would break down further.

Really appreciate any insight or guidance in this area.

Yep, you can pull on those studs sticking up (with your hands, not pliers), and it will come apart.

There are rubber cushins in there. You should be able to see the cushions through the holes on the brake drum side.

So it is as simple as just pulling the studs straight out?  I feel like I am missing something, as they don't seem to just be held in their by friction.

The bolts won't come out, but the part of the hub they're attached to will.  If you can slip something thin and sharp in the seam at the edge, you may be able to pry it out.

you'll have do some wiggling. Hold the outside of the hub with your feet, and pull.

If need be, put the nuts back on the studs to get a grip. Be patient, it'll come.

Thanks everyone, I will post the results once I get it off.  Just to confirm, there is no twisting or screwing (i.e. threads) holding it in.  It is simply stuck in there?

Good tip Dave!  I had mine still installed, and it gave me enough room to use my feet to clamp it down and pull it out.
