The time has come - maybe...

It has been some time since I have been active on the forum.  Life and other hobbies get in the way.  I am considering selling the Hot Rod CB750 that I modified a few years ago.  Mike built a killer motor for me.  I am unsure where to begin pricing the bike.  I know that parting it out would be a sin, but that seems to be where the money is.  I guess I really need to find a fanatic that is willing to buy it.

I am looking for some advice on how to sell a Hot Rodded CB750. If you search back on my old posts, you can find out what went into this bike.

Great looking bike, please dont part it.

Put it on ebay with great pics and description, and hopefully you will have a bidding war. These nice 750's are selling for good money now. Set a reserve that you won't take a bath on and you may be ok. Unless you spent an ungodly amount building it.

Good to see you're still around. Hope things are going well. Just fired mine up for the first time couple weeks ago. I remember what went into your's. Hope you can recoup a good chunk of what you spent. If I were to ask for mine what I put into it people would think I'm nuts. I must be come to think of it  ;D

Even though I've never seen or ridden your bike I'd sure as hell vouch for it.
As of today 3/13/2012 my original owner 75 CB750F has made it through 3 wives, er EX-wives. Free at last.  ;-)

The story.

Well, it was worth the shivers, but I finally made my first pass down the drag strip this evening.  It was damn cold riding home, but the warm thoughts of my run kept me going.
I went to Beaver Springs Dragway for the Friday Night Street Races.  Even though it is October, the place was packed.  I paid my $20 time trial fee and went through tech inspection.  The Hot Rod passed and I was given my number in line.  I wasn’t racing against another bike, just for time.  I was pretty nervous actually, but when the time for the run came, I was cool and collected.  I wanted to nail that light and as I was waiting in line, I watched the tree and did a mock start a few times.  I tried to visualize the start, gear changes, and line I would run.  I hoped I wouldn’t break traction or bog it off the line.  I decided to just launch the bike like I had been practicing and not try anything new or get the RPMs too high.

My turn came and I rolled to the line with a relatively cold tire.  Seems like burnouts aren’t really my thing as I tried to heat up the rear because it gained traction pretty quickly with a sideways squirt.  I staged the bike, rev’ed it to 4Ksih, the tree lit up and the next thing I knew I was out of the hole with a decent start.  9000 shift, 9500ish shift, 10000 shift, held it wide open through the trap.  I don’t remember if the front wheel “power wheelied” at all during the run, but if was smooth.  Holy cow, I can’t believe I just did that so well and the guy in the other lane was behind me!

I made my run and returned to the “pit” area to get my numbers.  I walked over to my wife, who was smiling (I was alive), and I said, “did you see that?”  “Yeah, that was loud!”, she said.  “How fast did it look?” I asked.  “Um, I don’t know, just fast and loud.  Are you going to do it again tonight?”  “No, I am freezing and I have a long ride home.” I said.

So the time slip read:
1/4 Mile ET:     11.903
1/4 Mile MPH:    118.876
1/8 Mile ET:    7.751
1/8 Mile MPH:    91.720
60 Foot ET:    1.805

Because this was a timed run the reaction time was handicapped so it didn’t matter.  I didn’t know that off the line.

I am not really sure if those are good numbers or not.  I think I could go faster if I had more runs under my belt.  I am a little mad at myself for not launching at a higher RPM and running every gear to 10000 RPM.  Best $20 I spent this year!

 If you ride it about a hundred times, you probably get the same money for it.. but YOU get a better deal...  you may regret it...

If you guys ever saw the polished cam cover you would S your pants. My good friend Alister did the cover work and he is an artist. He polished my JMC swingarm (because those guys did not even though I paid them too. I did eventually get that money back) which I just mounted. F'ng beautiful work. Welds perfectly polished but never compromised. Amazing. He was looking for some work but he does not work cheaply.

I listed it locally and already have had 12 emails and an offer of $6K.  I think $7k takes it home. I am confidant I can get it.  The bike will come with a lot of extra original parts, tools, manuals, etc.

Six people have made a trip to see the bike.  I have had four acceptable offers, but after talking to each person a bit more I have reservations selling it to someone who doesn't really know these bikes well, especially a hot rodded version. 

One person wrote this to me after he visited, "Your bike is too nice for me. I mean that as a compliment. I would want to ride it daily to work and on the weekends. It deserves better than that. You have an incredible bike and I wish you luck in finding someone who will take great care of it." I feel the same way.

Agreed. It would be a shame to use your bike as a daily rider. It is far above that.
Would not want to ride it in rain or leave it parked in a lot all day.

It has been a while since I posted this initial thread.  Just for an update.  I found a buyer that I was happy with, local guy with knowledge and appreciation of these machines.  Willing to pay my asking price.  Wanted to add my bike to his collection.  Told me I could visit it on weekends - LOL. 

I was ready to sell it to him and had a restless sleep the night before he was going to get it.  Decided to keep my bike, something just didn't want me to sell it.  Probably the fact that it is so damn cool and fun to ride and I would hate myself within an hour of letting it go.

When I told my wife she said, "Good, I am glad you came to your senses.  I know you love that motorcycle because you never had any of the others longer than a year or two before you sold them."  So true.  I hate to admit when my wife is right about my stupid ideas.   ;D

Now, if I can just stop treating my bike like a garage queen....

Thanks.  No more bike projects planned.  I am onto a vintage Ford truck project.  Like my bike, not going stock.  Instead a mix of pro-street and hot-rod.
