Ever wonder how a product could be made overseas, shipped by boat, then rail, then trucked to a store and sold for $1.00 ? And everyone along the line made a profit ?

It's called volume...order enough of anything and there's money to be made.

Yep, I was looking for some nice alloy rims for my Suzy GS1000 a few years ago and I stumbled onto a Chinese manufacturer via the interweb.

Somehow they got the impression that I was some highfalutin international motorcycle parts importer, so they offered me a couple of "samples" for my R&D team to evaluate before I placed an order for my first shipping container full.

The rims are great, beautifully made, and they cost less than 20 bucks apiece. (the manufacturer even paid for the shipping from China, what a nice bunch of guys!) Over here they'd be over 200 per unit. Cheers, Terry. ;D
I was feeling sorry for myself because I couldn't afford new bike boots, until I met a man with no legs.

So I said, "Hey mate, you haven't got any bike boots you don't need, do you?"

How did toyota, honda, nissan get to be so large? They were able to provide a cheap car that outlasted the current american boats. Pick your poison. In reality we are all guilty. We buy the stuff. I have a honda and a gmc truck. I expect the honda will be with me much longer than the gmc.
The Honda has more American made parts than the gmc, especially since the earthquake in japan

I watched an interesting program years ago about how Honda got a foothold in the US during the Reagan years, when RR put large tariffs on imports to keep the US industry alive.

Honda built their own factory on land (in Ohio, from memory) that the government "gifted" them, and received huge tax breaks, free electricity etc, as they were providing employment and keeping the local industry alive.

The deal was, apart from employing locals in their new factory, they'd use local manufacturers to supply them with parts, but there was a clause that if the local parts weren't up to Honda's exacting standards, they'd be allowed to import parts from their traditional suppliers in Japan.

Too easy, Honda just provided local suppliers with purposely inaccurate drawings or tooling, and when the parts that the local manufacturers (some of which had been supplying the US auto industry since the early 1900's) didn't fit, Honda was allowed to exercise the import clause, and all of those local suppliers went broke. Kind of sad, but that's business, I guess? Cheers, Terry. ;D

I guess my point is this. We (many of us) purchase according to price. How many people have bought those cheap vietnamese seats that are crap when pretty much every town has an upholsterer. We do it purely because of price. Corporations and even small businesses like mine are no different. I comparison shop and look for the best value of quality and price. If a product I need can be imported from indonesia for less money and is of the same or better quality than I could get here then I get the indonesian product. Same thing with american motorcycles and japanese motorcycles. As Mary Tyler Moore said, life goes on...

I've done lots of work for a Honda cotractor at the Anna plant, Honda has 2 mother plants in Ohio and several smaller plants that do not operate under the Honda banner. The Honda associates make very good money and are treated very well, the people at the smaller plants , ACM, CAPT are two I have worked at, not so much. The feeder factories pay about 1/2 what the Honda plants pay.

Yep, I understand what you're saying Brad, and the buying public can make or break a particular manufacturer, and the buying public are a fickle lot. At the moment in Australia, Ford's "Falcon" (their main "Family car" model here since the 1960's) has become a sales liability, because the buying public has fallen head over heels in love with SUV's. Mitsubishi fell out of favour with the buying public a couple of years ago and continued to produce the car they wanted to build, as opposed to the car we wanted to buy, and went broke, shut their factory in Adelaide, and now only import vehicles into Oz.

Small Japanese "econo-cars" became popular in the 1960's because they offered a (much) cheaper alternative to large gas guzzling family cars, and even though the first Toyotas and Datsuns were poor quality POS', they improved greatly over a decade and firmly established themselves as a viable alternative to the local product, at a cheaper price.

As I said earlier, the buying public are a fickle lot, and here in Oz at least, many of them think that our local product is of poorer quality than anything we import, which is rubbish. I was listening to a Mercedes owner waffling on about how much better his "Benz" is than our Fords and Holdens (GM Australia) and I explained to him that in Germany, his model "Benz" is used as a taxi, police car etc, and is nothing special at all, and I did a quick parts price comparison between parts for local cars, and his wonderful "Benz", and he almost fainted. Its that classic "Grass is greener on the other side" attitude that the buying public uses to justify not supporting the local industry.

I see the same anti-Harley bullschidt all the time here and on other motorcycle forums I'm a member of, all written by folks who've never owned one, comparing Harleys to their new Japanese bikes, and still using the "Oil Leaking, unreliable, poor handling" stereotypes to justify, once again, why they might wave their American flags on the 4th of July, then run down to their Honda shop on the 5th, to keep all their Japanese friends in work. Yes, I understand that not everybody wants a V twin cruiser, but what really sickens me is looking at pictures of American "Bikers" proudly displaying their American flags on their Japanese V twin cruisers, that's just pathetic.

I can still remember a letter to the editor of Popular Mechanics magazine back in the early 80's, that talked about this very subject. The author's final words were, "Are you unemployed, broke, homeless and hungry? Then eat your Honda". Cheers, Terry. ;D

What REALLY pisses me of are people who equate any policy position that they disagree with to Nazism. And calling the proponents of said position Hitler.

Bad art, nazis, fat chicks, fanatics, Yamaha, exotic cars, any hair products, the sound of people eating, animal cruelty, roto-tilling, cess pools, dead battery, the beach with too many other people leaving their trash and oily imprints on my minds eye.....but I mostly just get pissed off at time.

I need a time machine and the fact there isnt one yet is very very annoying. Screw Mars....get to work on the Time machine. :o

Sweaty balls. I love my laptop, but the little fcuker produces a lot of heat, and I end up with sweaty balls. Really annoying. I need a cooler or a little  lap table or something to reduce the prevalence of ball sweating. Maybe I should wear a kilt. Nah, maybe not............. ;D

That's "Brethren" Mick, and anyway, why can't we talk about sweaty balls? I was just watching an advert on TV for tampons, and seriously, it really put me off the Dagwood Dog that I was eating for dinner, especially with the tomatoe sauce dripping off it.

Compared to watching tampon adverts while you're chowing down on a saucy Dagwood Dog, talking about sweaty balls is really minor. I think I'll invent a product called "Manpons" for real men with sweaty pills, and make sure that all the TV adverts are on at dinnertime, just to get back at all those women who think I need to see tampon adverts while I'm trying to swallow my Dagwood Dog.............  ;D

what really gets me POd is in horror films when they finally overpower a bad guy and then don't kill him.

"this guy's killed 5 of our friends and been trying to kill us all night.  we've shot him 3 times, kicked him down the stairs, set him on fire, and threw him off the roof.  now that we've managed to knock him out with a shovel, let's just let him be and try to fumble with the locked door for a while...."

i mean really.  *sigh*
