No, but did have an Aussie stay with me for a bit.  I have to say it was an enjoyable experience.

I was feeling sorry for myself because I couldn't afford new bike boots, until I met a man with no legs.

So I said, "Hey mate, you haven't got any bike boots you don't need, do you?"

Sorry for my recent absence guys, my job (quite possibly the best job in the world BTW, but don't tell my boss or my wife I said that..........) allows me to jump in my company car and drive around Victoria staying in motels and eating and drinking on the company dollar, whenever I get bored, which is often.

It's really handy for me. One of the military bases where I "work" is not far from my elderly parents house in my old home town, so I try to visit them once a week. The motel I stay at on the Mornington Peninsula each week is right on the beach and the pub 200 metres away sells Bulmers Cider in pints, and makes great meals too, all of which my employer seems happy enough to pay for.

Anyway, I took off on Tuesday morning in my new company "truck" (new Ford Ranger diesel) and toured the countryside, eating, drinking and sleeping on the company dollar, and occasionally thought about doing some work. In my haste to get out of the house though, (slept in again, damn this 160 proof Wild Turkey!) I forgot to grab my laptop compuker so I could chat to you chaps.

That pissed me off somewhat, so I called my boss and asked for a company laptop, so I could "write reports from my Motel room, because I've got nothing else to do after work" and he said sure, he'll organise it, but he warned me not to overdo it, he didn't want me to burn myself out?

Ah, and my old school principle said (on one of my regular visits to experience some corporal punishment) I'd never amount to anything? If he knew what I'm doing for a job (and if he wasn't already as dead as disco) he'd be really pissed off! Cheers, Terry. ;D

We're in SA Pete, although it's a much smaller operation than in Vic. I spent some time there in 2006, (they put me up in the Adelaide Hilton for a few weeks, which was nice) but I haven't been back in ages. Next year I think they're going to make me the National Logistics Manager (because I work so hard.......) so I'll be in a position to use my influence to hire my friends, especially those who give me a ride on their CB1100R's........... If you get my meaning?  ;)

Since this seems to be Terry's new hangout, I thought I would pose a GS question in here and see what kind of feedback I get. I am looking at a 1978 GS1000 that visually is neglected (they were making a "boober") but owner claims that the engine runs. They cut the rear clip on it behind the shock mounts but I think I can make something so that I can get a decent seat back on it. Anyway the price is quite low so my question is, are they good bikes? Anything I need to look out for as far as known problems? any hard to find parts? Known missing parts are, seat, tank, exhaust and headlight as well as instruments and I will assume switch gear.

They're not good bikes mate, they're fcuking GREAT bikes! The 1978 model was the first, so it's a pity it's been cut, because it will be collectable. Has it got wire wheels? If it has, I'm jealous. The engines are super strong, roller bearing cranks are way over-engineered and the engine can easily handle 150+ BHP with no heavy duty rods etc needed. They'll do 130+ MPH outta the box, but to make em go (much) faster you need to buy a later model (1980 on) "big port" head, 1085cc kit, 33mm Mikuni smoothbore carbs, a set of high lift cams and a 4 into 1 pipe, and that'll get you another 40-60 BHP. You can do all this with the engine in the frame. They also handle better than any Jap bike of the 1970's had a right to, and will surprise you at just how well they go around corners.

What goes wrong? Not much. The clutch will probably rattle, which can be minimised by synching the carbs, but the rivets on the steel backing plate get loose after years of hard launches, so you'll need to re-rivet them. (not a hard job, check out the TheGSResources.com site for instructions) The regulators tend to crap out which can result in overcharged batteries but you can buy a better modern replacement for cheap offa Ebay, the vacuum fuel taps (petcocks) can crap out but a new one will cost 50 bucks on ebay, and that's about it.

The valves are easy to adjust (shims) but if it's been sitting for awhile make sure you do your clearances as they'll close up (valve recession) over a long sit, and the bike may not run if the clearances are too tight. If they're too loose, they can "spit a shim" (never happened to me, but it does happen occasionally) so set them, and re-check them every 10,000 miles or so. The original points ignition has probably been updated with a Dyna S, or a Martek (better) or a Gerex Multi Spark ignition. (about 11 out of 10 on the GS "Cool Factor" board)

Anyway, in summary, buy it and if you don't like it I'll buy it. I sold my GS1000 and even though it's still in my garage, I miss it already. Enjoy! Cheers, Terry. ;D

You're a dirty old man Pete, but you don't piss me off, for some odd reason? ;D

I replaced the clutch plates, springs (with heavy duty EBC items) and cable on my little CX500 today, and it works fine (I've only ridden around my street so I can't check for slippage until tomorrow or Sunday) but the shiny new cable is already on it's maximum adjustment? WTF? I suppose I can machine up a spacer to take up some of the slack, but it pisses me off that I bothered buying a new cable for no good reason? Poop!  ::)

What pisses me off is not paying attention to where I'm stepping. At work yesterday I was steeping off an I beam after mounting a huge 1 1/2 inch thick wing plate and my foot missed the stand the beam was setting on and down I went. First thought going through my mind as I was going down was "this is gonna hurt" and it did. I ended up landing on the stand I was supposed to be stepping on with my left thigh taking the brunt off the fall. Didn't break any bones so once I shook the pain of the fall off which took a good 20 mins I continued to work the rest of the day and at first it wasn't all that bad until the bruising and swelling started and by the end of the day I could hardly walk it hurt so bad. Once I got home I dropped my trousers to see just how bad it was and found a bruise big enough to take up half the side of my thigh with swelling to match so I'll be eating ibuprofen like candy this weekend. As much as the fall hurt it was a good thing the stand was there for me to fall on otherwise I probably would've done a face plant on the concrete floor.

Caught up with the ol' mate for a couple of pints after work tonight.
He just flew in from Perth because his mother in law just flew in from Scotland and that pissed him off so he hot footed it straight to the airport.  ;D

Now the ol' mother in law is pissed off because the son inlaw did the "Harold Holt" straight to Darwin.  ;D
It's fairly tropical here at the moment with the Wet Season build up and the ol' mates pissed off again because he's not use to the climate. ;D

So we smashed a few coldies in and I had to go before the Booze Bus made an appearance and leave him at the Fox Ale House with all of these good looking women.

That pissed me off.  ;D

If I was you
I'd be worried about me.

Geez mate, over here that injury would have gotten you a week off work (paid sick leave) and a claim for injuries received with "Workcover". (work related injury insurance) Be careful chomping down on that Ibruprofen though, it's a blood thinner, and if you cut yourself you'll just keep bleeding until there's none left.

I was chomping that stuff down a couple of years ago (toothache) and I got a blood nose which wouldn't stop, so I was hospitalised for 3 days! The nurses were nice old bags, but as ugly as a hat full of arseholes, so that really pissed me off! ;D

Yeah me working the rest of the day probably wasn't the smartest thing to do especially considering it happened early in the shift but I've got a 3 day weekend so hopefully that'll give it enough time to calm down till I go back Monday. I first checked it an hour after it happened and at that time bruising was minimal so I figured I could deal with it for the rest of the day, it wasn't until I got home and limped through the door and checked it again that I freaked out seeing how bad the bruising/swelling had got. The good news is that I got HondaMan's book yesterday so I've got plenty of good reading material to keep me occupied while I stay off my feet this weekend.
