G'Day Nomad, that's "Surfer's Paradise" on Queensland's Gold Coast. Bell's Beach is down here in Victoria where I live, there's no city to speak of nearby, just a couple of nice coastal towns, Torquay and Jan Juc.
I've got a soft spot for the hell's Angels because a couple of them saved me from a serious beating at the hands of around 20 "Skinheads" back in the 1970's, but they (all 1%er bike clubs) are silly buggers, they're all just "organised" criminal gangs nowadays manufacturing and distributing Methamphetimines, but they ride around with big signs on their backs advertising the fact.
The Mafia has been operating here in Oz for many years, but very few people know anything about them, because they keep to themselves and go about their illegal activities quietly. I grew up with a family of Sicilians next door and they were lovely people. Because my Dad found jobs for a couple of the sons we were invited to all the 21st Birthday parties, Engagement parties, weddings etc, and old Joe would fill my father full of Grappa on a regular basis. My dad was a sign writer, so he was given as much work as he could handle painting signs on truck doors, shop windows, etc, and unlike many of his other non-Italian clients, he was always paid on time, in cash.
To all intents and purposes, they were the perfect neighbours, but they were also all heavily involved with the Cosa Nostra, the Sicilian Mafia. I don't know if my folks knew about it at the time, but it became obvious a few years later when Tony, the oldest son, was questioned in Melbourne along with some other Italian-Australian boys when Donald McKay, an anti-drugs campaigner, disappeared in Griffith, in New South Wales. McKay's body was never found, and Tony and his mates were released without charges laid.
I like Italians, I worked for a couple of Italian-Australian cousins when I was in the Army, and they were great guys. They loved eating and drinking, they had a knack for making money, and were always very generous. As long as I didn't ask too many questions, there were never any problems. If I was gonna get into organised crime, I'd work with these guys before I'd ever get involved with outlaw motorcycle gangs. It'd hard to be "covert" when you're running around with big signs on your backs............
