When you popped cover did you see a hot can0m or springs ?
It's got a lightened alternator on it.
You can see if it's got big bore with a cylinder light .. i can actually see enough of the piston in a dark room using a flashlight..

Thanks guys, yep, I’m wondering if he ever ran it, because I pulled the plugs and they were all brand new? It was getting late when I pulled the cam cover, so even though I thought the cam lobes looked pretty big, I didn’t measure them.

No fancy titanium or alloy spring keepers either, but it did look like it’s been ported. I’ll take a peek through a plug hole with my borescope and see if I can take a look at the pistons, and I might be able to see the base of the cylinders when I pop the sump pan off.

A bore kit , side of piston will extend past valve cut outs, often a flat band .. not like a stock piston. And cutouts will be deep .
Just compare to stock slug before looking. . Cam you will visibly see a wider nose. even an F cam has noticeable duration difference.. . Some spring sets use stock collars , harder to spot changed springs ....indexable cam sorocket..almost never seen on stock cams.

Thanks Frank, it has a stock late model cam sprocket so might be just a mild drop in cam. Not an F2 cam though, no raised band. Seems to have heaps of compression though, I sprayed WD40 over everything and down the plug holes and tried to kick it over with my hand, and really struggled to turn it over. I’ll take a better look today.

ok call me behind the times etc,our computer went a bit #$%* and seeing it was like 8 years old and running win 7 we thought get a new one,so had a shop set up a new box with our old hard drive to retain files etc,ok now we got win 10 with a solid state samsung drive,the guy is gonna mirror our drive next week,i cant fathom this new 10 yet?pisses me off.

I dropped a set screw and it fell into the trash can and while I was probing the darkest recesses with the magnet on a stick where I clearly saw it fall into another dimension, there it was right there sitting on the top.
What pissed me off was the dang trash can was under the vise in the first place. That's on me.
That set screw on the Firebirds steering u joint has a 12mm wrench size nut on it. The threads were finally determined to be 5/16" coarse, not metric at all. Tricky forkers.

I'm both happy and pissed off, all at once. I fired up my K0 for the first time today. It started on the second kick, and seems to be running well. The oil pressure lamp went off straight away, and I popped off one valve inspection cover and was happy to see oil spraying around inside.

So what's pissing me off? I'm having an issue with the clutch not disengaging. I pulled the clutch apart, replaced all the fibre plates with new ones, checked that none of the steels are warped, made sure that the back of the clutch hub's "splines" were engaged with the plates, that there were no notches worn in the slots of the hub where the plate "ears" slide back and forth, that the new springs were the correct length, as were the new bolts on the pressure plate, and that everything was properly assembled, but the baaastard still wouldn't disengage.

Then the weather turned to sh1t, so I'll take a look at that tomorrow, after I take one of the other bikes for a ride.

Thanks Bill, I'm really happy that it's a motorcycle (I was gonna say "I'm really happy that it's a motorcycle again", but I built the engine out of various parts I've collected over the years, and this engine was never in the frame that it's in now, so it's kind of a new motorcycle entirely, albeit built from a lot of used parts) and I'm sure the clutch issue will be something simple.

I'm thinking that the actuator isn't pushing the pressure plate far enough to separate the plates, so I'll rat around for another actuator tomorrow. If the worst happens, I'll swap an entire "known" clutch in from the Bitsa engine (it's coming out anyway to be replaced with the engine I bought on Thursday) and that should sort it out.

We missed the kid's and grandkids so we did an outdoor socially distanced and masked visit and I delivered fish food, dew worms and a rim fire 22. There was an 8x8" mineral block endways across the pond that we left for the Deer to find so we decided that was the target. We're guessing 50 to 60 yards away. Having never shot it before we hit it 7 of 10 shots. My new to me target toy didn't arrive yet and that pissed me off.

That’s interesting Cowman, my bike has done 147.000 miles without an issue, but I had a problem where as my battery was dying, I’d jump start it, it’d start fine, but the revs would creep up to 4K RPM and stay there until I’d done a few miles, which was uber frustrating because as you know, 4K RPM on an FJR1300 is scary in any gear in busy traffic.

I read up on all the forums and the “Experts” were talking about a “wax motor” issue and there was a “fix” that involved pulling half the bike apart, which I did, to no avail. When I’d just about decided that the old FJR was gonna get retired, I installed a new battery and it started and idled perfectly @ 1000 RPM. I then realised that it’s tiny brain was sensing that the battery wasn’t fully charged, so was telling the engine to rev to 4K to charge the battery.

There was nothing wrong with any other part of the bike, and the “Experts” didn’t know what they were talking about, a common issue on motorcycle forums.

Mine went through dealer diagnostics and factory tech support said to replace the throttle bodies.

Since there is a single part number for the whole assembly. Can't just repair the failing doohickey 🤦‍♂️
Aside from being a $2100 mikuni system. The availability in america is qty;0 - thankfully, ebay has a bountiful supply of $117 junkyard parts.

Which will have to be installed by non-factory-authorized personnel. Since the industry is not in the business of rebuilding sh!t these days.

I sent a very nice top triple clamp out through USPS Priority shipping from CA. on 10/27/20' to Cyprus and the buyer wanted to get it Fast.. The item left the USA on a plane from Kennedy Airport,NY. on Nov.7 and the item is tied-up somewhere in Cyprus in one of their Cyprus postal Customs places.. Pisses me off.I don't want to refund the buyer his $ because of that slow stuff..Which SHOULDN'T have been That slow ! I'm trying to tell the buyer i'm doing my best.. but it's 'out of my hands' ?!!

please be patient,it will get to you ?? The buyer has a right to be pissed-Off.

No worries, if it's not your battery on it's last legs, then maybe the Yamaha techs are right, but I have very little confidence in the auto industry in general after catching two different workshop managers this year lying to me about work needed that wasn't true. While there's a lot of plumbing and crap under the tank, it's not that hard to work on them, so why not do it yourself? If it's a common issue, there are probably "How To" videos to watch on Youtube? There's not much more satisfying than fixing something yourself.

It's not your problem Bill, if you've sent the buyer the tracking details, then you've done your job. It took 2 months for the K0 tank trim I bought from Everett Powersports in the US to arrive yesterday, but they're a great company to deal with, so I had no choice but to wait. Ebay won't force you to refund his money if you can prove you sent it, and Ebay continue to send me emails telling me to be patient because of Covid-19 slowing down the mail system, and if Cyprus is like the rest of Europe, they're probably overwhelmed. I'm trying not to buy anything from overseas that I need in a hurry, unless they'll send via Fedex or UPS, who are both way more expensive, but are doing a great job of moving stuff from the US to Oz in as little as 1 week.

Priority at least a few times has been slower than AirMail. What pisses me off is when they tell the shipper it MUST go priority at a higher rate.. last one went Colorado to Chicago, Thorpe back out west to I think Seattle , then here..
2000 miles out of the way it went... waste of resources. . And money..

These shippers will ensure that the package arrive at all.
I got a package 2 weeks ago from CycleX, max 1 week shipping maybe a little less. UPS. Not that much shipping relatively other shippings from USA by USPS.

USPS and local post here hardly lower cost and higher risk not getting it at all.

A colleague has recently lost 2 packages, arrived at main airport, then lost. Probably logos outside the package that hired scumbags want. Only way for him is to contact PayPal. Companies can probably take a loss.
