Once you get the product you will be free to unload Don. They are deplorable...

John, flame trap design in old 240/740/940 era of Volvo designs could push out seals if not serviced... Luckily you aren't dealing with that. If the separator buried low on the block clogged it was a major problem changing it.

Yours might be something simple and easy once you get into it...
Might just be a valve cover gasket or a hose clamp.
Have you identified if it is oil or other fluid that is leaking? The bad thing is modern cars are very compact in their design and that makes for difficult jobs for people like me with big hands.

Yep, I’ve got to replace the timing belt on the wife’s front wheel drive Hyundai. Was supposed to be changed at 50K miles, has now done 95. Bought everything to do it, just don’t want to…. ;D

While you're in there take note of the idler bearings, that's what I used to make new ones for my 78 goldwing. I got some funky bolts too, I forget the exact recipe.

Friend's son has ASE automotive certs in 3-4 areas after testing having done high school auto shop in a county school in a neighboring county. He was hired by a local dealer and they have so many engine failures on the cheap K & H cars they as a dealer offer a lifetime replacement for engine failures and the like.. all the engine parts on both the H or K engines are interchangeable and direct fit replacement. Truly horrible quality on the low end car line in terms of low priced models.  The engines have so many problems that engine failures are frequent.
So, be thankful your engine isn't among the new crop and it had some decent engineering. The race to the bottom happens at some and AI couldn't imagine having one of these cars at a dealer where they didn't do it for free and put up a fuss to get out of a claim.

These days water pumps and timing belts and harmonic balancers all get changed at similar intervals.

The oil leak in the Volvo C30 turned out to be the oil feed pipe to the turbo. It’s a solid line with banjo bolts and totally rotten. Not touching it until the line, bolts and washers arrive. Looking at the turbo boost control valve, I doubt it can actually be working. Spotted one on Amazon for almost nothing so that will get changed too. I bought this car from a friend that kept it immaculate and then had the dealer offer him $2500 (Canadian) on trade! My wife really likes it, so not scrapping it yet. But it better not piss me off.

hey Terry ive done ours 4 or 5 times plus other little front drive cars, remove driver side under splash guard, remove drivers front wheel, jack under engine and remove upper engine mount, youll see how the rest goes easy, ive left water pumps in place for two belt swaps, why throw a good known pump its not that hard to do just the pump, but do check your balancer hasnt slipped on its ring the marks wont line up correctly,i used the same idler for say 3 belt changes, only because its our car.

Thanks Dave, that’s good to know. I contacted the mechanic who did the Roadworthy Inspections on both of my utes and he was talking around $700 to just fit the parts that I bought (new belt kit, idlers, seals, water pump etc, plus the 3 ancillary belts) which I thought was a bit steep, so I think I’ll bite the bullet and do it myself, the weather is getting better here now, so I’ll do it one weekend in the not too distant future and spend the money on hookers and booze instead. Do Hookers still make headers? ;D

Left the Volvo C30 at the local shop for an oil line replacement. Came home and walked around the back and spotted this! Shop suspects a tow truck that dropped a car a few days ago. Torn right through…..Piss me OFF!

Volvo Canada wants $2000 for a new one! I’ll probably glue it shut and paint it over with a brush. It’s a $2K car……. It doesn’t have another mark on it.

Shouldn't the shop be paying for it since the car was in their care and control?

Yes…. Tim (also the guy I race the LEXUS with) has already found a good, used replacement. I’m not that fussed about it. Remember, I smashed the race car is the Spring…… He’ll make it right, for sure.

No matter what you paid for a car, it still quite rightly pisses you off John. My 22 year old Ford pickup doesn’t have a mark on it either, but after spending some time (and a fair bit of cash) at the shop I noticed a small dent under the left sill panel that I hadn’t noticed before. If I was a suspicious type I’d guess that they either tried to jack it up in the wrong spot or drove over something like an arm of their hoist, but as I couldn’t be sure that it wasn’t there before I dropped it off, I just let it go. The trouble now is every time I look at the truck I notice the dent and it pisses me off. ;D
