1977 CB750 Supersport 2-up Cafe
« on: July 27, 2012, 11:18:41 PM »
The way I got it. The previous owner tried to install an electronic ignition 4 years ago and never could get it to run right. After sorting out the ignition, cleaned the carbs about 4 times and she finally ran decent. I purchased the bike for $450 bucks and have less than $1500 into it as of right now. Next start modifiting it to look cool.

Bent up a hoop for the rear of the bike. I will be building a two up seat to haul my woman around.

Had a bunch of parts powdered gloss black, wheels, lower legs, chain guard, and headlight besil. Taking off the bearing seals on these wheels was a nightmare!

List of parts.
-Led blinkers
-For gators
-Headlight ears
-Firestone "Coker" Tires
-New mirrors
-Wrapped headers
-Clip-ons
-Dirtbike front master
-Battery
-Plugs

Should have it in a roller by the end of the weekend. Will be similar to my current bike, 1975 CB500t.

Made some progress today. Got tubes in the tires and up to pressure. Mounted the swingarm and rear brake assembly. Mounted the exhaust and modified muffler.

Going to build the seat like this....

The new black wheels look great.  Looking forward to how the seat turns out.

Got the hoop welded in today. Was a major pain in the ass. I think it came out ok though. Added a bend to make sure I have plenty of clearance from the tire, especially riding with two people.

Got the front blinkers mounted. Just waiting on the clear to dry on the headlight bucket, and the front end will almost be complete.

I didn't like how the initial gussets came out, so I added a radius to make it more stock looking. I also filled any welds that might be seen and ground everything smooth. Tomorrow Ill be working on the seat pan and shaving the foam.

Fink, I've been trolling your build and feel the need to come out of the woodwork and give you props. I'm subscribed and catching updates at every post; really looking forward to seeing the end results. Keep up the good work and know you've got at least one follower ;) .

Also, where are you at in NH?

Cheers,

I'm in Londonderry, NH. Thanks!

Got the seat pan built today. Its 1/4" Masonite reinforced with fiberglass. The seat pan is held to the frame with 8mm bolts. I welded both the front & the back together so they wont spin. Got the seat foam roughed in, still alot of grinding to go, but getting there.

Got the Seat shaved to its final shape. Once i got it where i wanted it, I glued on 1/4" memory foam. Should be comfortable for me, not so much for the passenger:). Also mounted a biycycle speedo. It works on a magenet that spins. I mounted the magnet to one of the brake bolts. Drilled out the head, and JB welded it with some safety wire. Works like a charm...

Thanks for the kind words gentlemen. Today I wired in all the blinkers and tail/brake light. Put on rethal kevlar grips, and Took the bike out today for its maiden voyage. This thing rips. Ill get some action shots up eventually. Still a bunch left to do but its rideable. Chanding the headlight to a CB550/500 which is in the mail. Gotta paint a bunch of stuff, but its been way to humid the past couple of days.

Not too much visual progress on the bike but I have been riding it a lot.

-All new cables
-Installed #42 Pilot jets, and lowered the needle one clip
-New Petcock
-Removed my dry rotted reservoir and replaced with Tygon tubing
-Installed a replacement Halogen housing with replaceable bulb. Seems to vibrate, does anyone else have this issue?

*Need front right rotor and caliper if anyone has one.

Finksies, I love what you did with the seat and the frame modifications I am in the process of fabricating a seat pan for my 76 cb750f and am running into the issue of clearance with the tire, so this thread has given me lots of ideas.

Where did you get the blinkers? Are they LEDs? I'm new to the area of electronics, however, I've heard that these older bikes don't handle LEDs very well without some electronics modification. Is that true? Love how minimal those blinkers are!

Thanks!
-Nate

Blinkers are an Ebay Special. Cheap money, I think about $20 bucks for all 4 (Shipped from China). They are led. This means you will need a new "Flasher relay". This can be purchased at your local automotive shop(About $14). Take out the old flasher relay, install the new. You now have Led turn signals that actually flash! Let me know if you have any other questions.

Jconley: welsome ot the board. Why are you posting this question in this thread?

If you have a question about the CB500 twin start a new thread in the Other Bikes section. It's very active and you should be able to get the answers you need there without hijacking someone elses thread.
