Shielded wire

I pulled my side cover off to find a mess of wiring and bad splicing I want to clean up. Is it ok to splice into shielded wire? What's the best method? Here is how it currently looks.

There should be no (zero) shielded wire anywhere on the bike, unless you have a radio - the antenna cable would have shielded wire.
That's a wiring nightmare. You should remove all the kludged crap and redo the repairs properly (it looks like there was an overheating incident very badly "fixed" by someone who shouldn't do such work).

My 76 says there is a shielded wire. Is this not correct?

It's 'shielded' in the sense that it has extra thick insulation. If it were truly shielded there would be a metal mesh around the wire.
It's almost twice as old as me, I don't know how the hell it works!

That "shielded" harness wire is the unfused battery +12 wire that goes from the solenoid stud with the battery "+" cable to the fuse box and rectifier. The shield is a protective tubing sleeve to add abrasion resistance. If that wire has its insulation wear through and touches the frame there's no fuse to protect it: you would get a melted wire at best and possibly a fire.
What I would call shielded wire has a metal cover to reduce any RF radiation or pickup from the centre conductor. Some have a braided wire shield, some use a wrap of metal foil.

All our SOHC bikes have this 'shielded' wire as Bodi describes. It would not be good to 'tap into' this wire as there is no fuse to protect any added circuit. Needs to be done after the fuse box.....

It is a short run, out bottom of fuse box, then up and out #3 in the pic, right?

Can't tell from your pic. but it goes from the solenoid ( has a ring terminal to fit the stud ) to the 15A fuse in the fuse block and is a solid red color ( under the insulating sleeve ).

That's easier than I thought. Mine currently goes from solenoid to main harness, then cuts down another branch and hits the fuse box from the bottom. I guess that was just the hard way? Hopefully I don't find anything else attached...
