Topic: How do you remove the damn 6mm bolts...

I can't get a wrench on the bolts that are up against the the rocker arm towers on the intake side.

The nuts on the exhaust side were easy but the bolt heads are right next to the towers. I can't get a socket or a box end on them.
What's up with that?

1/4" extension!!!!!

That's not the problem...

The walls of my (thin wall!! ) socket and box end are too thick; won't fit between the head of the bolt & the tower.

My open end 10mm wants to round off the heads.

A cheap tool that works: the 1/4" drive 6-point metric socket set (in chrome or colors!) from Harbor Freight ($8, I think?). They also fit the recessed 6mm bolts that hold the head to the cylinders, a similar situation. You will need a 3" long extension for the socket to reach those, too.

belt sander + 6pt socket = removal tool. or what Hondaman said. The early heads are a bear to remove the head bolts.

I think Autozone might have some 1/4 drive...


I thought about grinding one down, hoped I wouldn't have to do that.

It is a tight fit. My Thin wall deep well sockets fit, decades old Craftsman. Requires a gentle tap to really engage. Grinding the closest thing you've got down to a fit is a good idea.

I bet a Snap-On box end wrench would work.

Got a 1/4 drive deep 10. Just fits.

And as an added bonus I made an excuse to buy a new tool 
I got a mini die grinder in case I had to mill down the OD of the socket
