'74 550 clutch rebuild advice
« on: July 29, 2012, 06:18:25 AM »
I tried doing a bit of searching, but didn't find much on specific clutch rebuild instructions. (plus my first question is pretty noob)

My clutch is slipping just a tiny bit at the high end. But not always. I've tried all the adjustments, including on the side of the case. The case bolt will screw in all the way, and maybe even right into the case so there is no room for the lock nut.

- So do I just replace the friction plates? Say with Honda OEM?
- Do I replace the springs? With Honda OEM as well?
- and where do I get the case gasket? Says it's discontinued.
- and other advice would be really appreciated

Thanks!

Are you making sure to hold the clutch lever arm up when making the adjustment with the screw on the side of the case?  In other words, hold up the lever to the point where it stops. then (assuming the mark is not lined up, screw in or out to get them lined. (so the mark on the arm and the case are lined up).

If that was already addressed the next thoughts are:
With wet clutches we always have to ask what oil are you using? This can end up being 3 things together. Oil, spring, plates.

If I had the same issue, honestly I would replaced both based on what you have done. Also the gaskets can be found. : http://www.bikebandit.com/athena-complete-engine-gasket-kit?m=9230
I would order the whole set. (if you plan on addressing other things later, it wouldn't hurt to have them ready, and you save).

I just re-checked the case adjustment and it was out somewhat. I held up the lever while doing the adjustment and it requires that I back out the threaded bolt all the way (until it stops turning), to get the dot on the arm to line up with the mark on the case. I'll give the bike a good hoot in the morning and see if this helps. Could the adjustment on the case being wrong actually cause clutch slippage?

Thanks

yea it could. If you had to bring the lever down to line up the marks, (when you did the screw adjustment.)
