Yrjo's crash
« on: July 30, 2012, 02:00:40 AM »
It was reported in this thread http://forums.sohc4.net/index.php?topic=63228.0 by his father Rene (Howell)
If you do not visit all the threads you might not have seen this.
Several members have and have contacted me in regards to setting up a fund like we did for Brian (Bear).
I got into a bit of hot water for using my company computer for Brians fundraiser so to avoid this happening again, I contacted Rene about it to see if he had a Paypal account that funds could be paid into for Yrjo.
This was Rene's reply.

Hi Sam,

Just back from Belgium for just one day to organize some things I read your message.
Yrjo is still in the hospital in Belgium - Antwerpen , first he was at the local hospital in Chimay were the races were.
Thursday he is tansported to the university hospital in Anwerpen for further examination.
Yrjo made a terrible crash , Colin Stockdale saw it happen.
On second place behind Steve Elliot in the third lap he touched a strawbale with his right leg and then he couldn't hold the bike and then made a frontal crash on the left side of the track in a tyre wall.
He broke his right hip,his left flintbone and his ankle wich is an open fracture.
His ankle and hip are very serious fractures,
The fractures are all very complicated,he is directly operated in the Chimay hospital.
There is a big chance he will stay handicapped.
We hope that he will transported to Holland next week , were he can work on his recovery in a rehabilitation center.
When he may leave the bed , he has to sit for three month in an wheelchair and then work on his rehalibitation.
He is fit and strong , so we hope that his recovery turns out  the good way.
Thank you for your proposal to start a fund, but that is not necessary at this moment , we think his assurances pays the medical costs.
I will post a mesage on the forum about his crash.

best regards René

Perhaps if we all just send him some kind words it will help.

Sam. ;)

Yrjo......we don't know each other......I am a fellow bike enthusiast from Wisconsin in the USA.  I crashed my bike when I was much younger and broke my hip and leg, along with both wrists and a few teeth. I also bent my knee backwards.  This was in 1966.  The doctors put a steel rod in my leg and sent me home after 4 weeks in a hospital bed.  I slowly recovered enough to begin driving a car after 3 months of laying around at home.  It was a slow recovery for me (2 more hospital visits) but I was back on a bike the next spring and have been riding ever since.

With today's improved medical services, you should have a better chance of a faster and more complete recovery. My advice is to enjoy the forced vacation time as best you can. We are all pulling for you to have a complete recovery...God's Speed.

Zeer erg om zo'n bericht te horen, zeker omdat het zo lekker leek te gaan allemaal.
Hopelijk hersteld Yrjo snel en zonder al te veel blijvend letsel. Veel sterkte gewenst voor de aankomende tijden!

Very bad to hear such a message, especially because it seemed so good to all.
Hopefully Yrjö restored quickly and without too much permanent injury. Many strength desired for the next time!

Nice try Sam  ;) Unfortunately it's never a 1-1 translation with Dutch-English, but this is what Nap says more or less;

I am very sorry to hear such a message, especially because you seemed to be doing so well lately.
Hopefully Yrjo recovers quickly and without too much permanent remaining injuries. I wish you all much strength in these harsh times !

Correct translation !
Next friday we hear if he will be transported to a hospital in Holland.
We are staying on a campsite with our camping car in Antwerpen and visit him every day.
Yrjo is feeling good .

Why put straw bales on the inside of the corner {on the edge of the track} , that is just asking for trouble IMO..... ::)

Mick, it is a road circuit like the IOM, perhaps there is a gully or something under the straw bales that is not as easy to spot as the bales, I doubt they would put them there just for the fun of it.
I heard from the Net that the guy that lost his life on the Saturday was due to a massive heart attack and not rider error. Seems getting all excited on a race bike can be more dangerous than the racing itself.

hi rene

good to hear that yrjo is recovering.
do you think it was in any way related to the new tires you were using? or just because of being too close to the bales?

Sam. :(

The trawbales are layed there to avoid that the riders take a inner line over a kind of parking place before a barn.

Yrjo is recovering mentally pretty well, but physical will take a long time.
Some friends cheered him up with some men magazins.
Today we heard that he will transported by ambulance to a nursinghome in his hometown.

Hi TG,

Yrjo thinks it's a combination of both, the Conti's react much more directly then the Avon and Dunlop tyres.
The practices were under wet track conditions, so he didn't reach the limits of the tyres then and maybe in the dry race he was surprised by the way the Conti's reacts and came to close to the bales.

Yrjo,

I'm very sorry to read about your incident.  In 2008, I went off in the grass at about 130mph and was approaching a tire wall....quickly.  I had to get off the bike and my right foot went down first, resulting in many fractures and a dislocation.  I was on crutches for about 6 months.  Physical therapy will be hard, but I'm sure the love of racing will help push you through it.  When it comes down to it, the racing community is very small, and I'm sure you will receive loads of support (and men's magazines...)

Best of luck in your recovery, and we hope to see you back on the grid soon enough.
