Missing on 2,4 CB550F
« on: July 31, 2012, 11:26:27 AM »
Hi,

I have a 77 CB550F.  I picked it up in rough but running state.  On the way home the bike kept cutting out when opening full throttle and eventually wouldn't start again.  Pulled the plugs and they are black from running too rich.  the guy before ran it on full choke (thinking it was no choke)

When I got the bike off the recovery truck and restarted it ran really rough again.  I have changed the plugs and cleaned the carbs and got similar rough and rich running.  When pulling the new plugs 1,4 were black, 2,3 were covered in unburnt fuel.  So My thoughts were that 2,3 weren't firing

On checking the points it was clear that someone had tried to use an impact driver to loosen one of the fixing screws and this had bent the stator which meant the points were distorted and it looks like they don't open at all.  Given the cost of replacing all of that I went for an electronic ignition.  That is all in and seemingly correct (it has a timing light built in and that is spot on)  Starting it up again and it runs as bad as it did with the dodgy points.

Could the points that never opened damaged the coil?  or is it likely that the carbs i rebuilt need setting up better?  or is it another electrical gremlin spoiling my summer?

If you connect a plug to the wires and lay it on the engine, can you see it spark?

Does the Black/White wire to the coil get 12V?

Can you verify the wire between coil and ignition module is electrically intact?

Does swapping plugs move the symptom?

Not likely.  But, you can check the primary with an ohmmeter.
