What type of ignition "plate" is this
« on: July 30, 2012, 12:08:23 PM »

I have some ignition problems .. no sparks I think this might be the culprit.

any one know what it is.. and how to test it?

thanks in advance

I've not seen that before, but I would say its an electronic ignition system that uses magnets to trip.

Bikes I own:

1974 CB550K
1971 CB450

optical or hall effect pickup going by the slot cut out of the disc,it looks home made?the leads from it should run into some kind of electronic box not directly to the coils, leads from the box should run to the coils.

Definitely optical. The black things the disc runs between are called "photon coupled interrupter modules". There is an LED (possibly infrared) on one side, and a photo transistor on the other side. When the light shines through the window in the disc, the transistor turns on.

I have never seen this before.  I would say it is very much optical.  I'm guessing its a good candidate for a "burned out bulb".  (I know its not a "bulb")

Like Dave said, there must be some sort of amplifier box; the modules I've found will only handle 50-60 mA. A couple of parts that appear to be the same physically are NTE 3100 and NTE 3101. There is a PDF on NTE's website. Find the box, and make sure it is getting power.

So.. basically.. get something to replace this one...

My coils were worn, I have managed to borrow some functioning ones.
but I have ordered up new coils.. the ones that fit the later models the cb900 with replaceable wires.

what kind of plate should I order to get this working with the cb900 coils?

Kirk, first I should say welcome to the forum! While I can't identify your ignition, I do believe I've heard of an optically triggered system designed to fit an SOHC. I would not be so quick to discount it before investigating deeper into it.
Do you know the ohm rating on the CB900 coils?

Well I have had the bike for almost two years...

but I personally havent ridden it..  cause I had to do a tour to afghaistan which took last year summer away.. and since we live in norway there isnt much summer
and I did a teardown of the bike to get it repainted... and replace the starter motor..

now it doesnt start (it has started before but was hard getting to start)... so.. there you have it all

if the battery is low even trying to kick start it probably wont work with an electronic ignition, they stop operating around 8 volts or thereabouts, make sure the battery is charged and good first.

Hey I like that ignition mate, wanna sell it? Or if you'd like to trade, I've got a shiney new points plate assembly from David Silver spares in a box out in my garage? I've got a bit of a collection of electronic ignitions for CB750's, I should mount them on a wall or something! Cheers, Terry. ;D
I was feeling sorry for myself because I couldn't afford new bike boots, until I met a man with no legs.

So I said, "Hey mate, you haven't got any bike boots you don't need, do you?"

track all the connectors that run into the ignition, disconnect and clean them, youve checked the fuse of course and its contact, then check all the other connectors on the bike even in the head light bucket.

People just throw away parts without thinking.
OR they do not mark them or tag them and later on no one knows what it is.

I have seen thousands and thousands of dollars worth of parts thrown away
because people do not tag the parts.

that aftermarket disc part replaces the points cam but still runs its advance system, the cam is removed like a boyer unit,it should look like this complete.

the paint lines show where to align the marks up so it works properly.
