CB350 twin camchain tension adjusting procedure
« on: June 23, 2006, 03:55:06 AM »
I reassembled yesterday the camshaft and rockers of my CB350 twin and got a little confused. The haynes manual simply says to release the lock bolt until the plunger compresses the jockey wheel, and then lock the lock bolt and the lock nut. On the contrary, the Handa manual says the same but to be done 90º after the left cylinder is at TDC, according to the rotor marking. Problem is, the rotor have no marking at 90º after TDC. I believe the directions were for the first versions, where the tensioner was spring and oil actuated.

I have already set the valve clearances, and from my point of view, it doesn't really matter where the crankshaft is, as the chain have to be tight in every position. Is there an "official" procedure?

P.S. I made sure to use the green loctite (the harder) on the camshaft sprocket bolts. Even when I cleaned the threads as much as I could, I'm afrad that the remaining oil will affect the thread locking. In case it doesn't, how hard is to remove a bolt secured with the green stuff?

Thanks man. But wait until it's finished; it will look even better! If only it runs as good as it seems...

Thanks,

Sorry about that. As an snobby CB750 owner I sometimes forget that the lesser bikes belong to another forum. Mr. Moderator, please move it there. Bryan had PM'd me with the right procedure, and I hope he doesn't mind if I paste here what he said. This could help somebody out there.

(1)   Find a method of turning the crankshaft either by kickstart or by a spanner on either end—this may involve removing an outer cover.
(2)   Put weight on kickstart or spanner so that crankshaft is just about to turn in normal direction i.e. the “front” run of the camchain is tight.
(3)   Loosen the tensioner lock nut and bolt and then with tension held on kickstart or spanner do up the bolt and locknut.
