1941 Indian Four (Unfortunately, not mine)
« on: June 23, 2006, 06:52:05 AM »
I was at the barber today getting my ears lowered. The conversation turned to vintage bikes. The barber one chair over brings out a recent snap shot of his 1941 Indian In-line Four. Appears to be in great shape cosmetically, but in need of an engine rebuild. The owner says he has acquired all the needed parts, but needs to find a mechanic experienced with Indians to do the work.

He didn't specify how far he would go (Indian is in the Ann Arbor, MI area), but is willing to load it up and trailer it to a mechanic's location. I would guess anywhere in lower Mich, Ohio, Indiana area. Does anyone have have any knowledge of such a mechanic?
We'll all be someone else's PO some day.

Could try Vintage American Motorcycle Machine Shop Service.

They specialize in Indian fours.

Robby Robinson  559-683-6481 or

vintageamerican@sierratel.com

Only problem is they are in California.

Good luck to the barber.

Oh Man, I can surely understand that feeling. It would be totally awesome to have one of those to take out for a stroll now and then. Stark Indian &  Kiwi do the Indian V-Twins, I'm not sure about the Fours though. I don't recall the actual websites. I think there is/or are a place/s in or around Illinois but, I'm not sure. I'll have to go for now and, when I get back ( if no one has added anything),
I'll try to see what I can come up with. In the meantime, check with Uncle Ernie, he might be able to help you out.  Good Luck.   Later on,  Bill

I know a fellow that restores them (does great work and his stuff has won grand national restoration awards), but I'm not sure he'd be interested in doing it for someone else, as he hardly has enough time for his own bikes!

Kinda on the same subject. Anybody seen the Kiwi Reproduction Chief? Sharp looking bike with some modern technology thrown in. Only problem I have is, if I tried to buy one (at their price), I'd be thrown out! There are a few visual changes but, right off the bat, the Indian head fender light is missing. I've got an original "Roadmaster" script that would look good on it though. I don't remember who right off but, there is an OHV conversion out there for the 80ci V-twin also. Gotta get out of here before I get wound up again. Later on, Bill

Well in 2000, my cuz got me to sell his unfinished 1915 Indian "Power Plus" for him on Ebay, A dealer in germany bought it for $7500.00 US which included a spare frame, wheels, tinware etc and still complained because it apparently had the wrong model carb on it, so I reminded him that he was also bidding on another (restored) Power Plus that was sitting on $16000.00 with 3 days to go, (eventually went for $30K) so he had plenty of margin for profit, on almost two complete bikes. Kinda left a bad taste in my mouth, and started me wondering about "collectors" as a whole?

Hard times hit my cuz again a year later, so I sold his Indian 4 engine (another unfinished project) on Ebay for him for around $5K,  this time the winner was in Canada, he paid by bank transfer, but didn't like my shipping quote, so organised his own. All I did was help lift the crate into the back of the courier van. As I said, he organised the shipping, but then got snakey with me because he hadn't received the crate and demanded his money back? I told him to f*ck off, anyway, he eventually received it and sent me an apology and some pics of his restored bike, but I decided then and there that collectors of expensive vintage bikes are all dickheads.

My cuz now owns a beautiful restored 1948 Chief with a sidecar, he got it for the bargain price of $15K (with an original factory sidecar) and I told him that if he ever decides to sell it, he can do it himself, I'm sick of Indian collectors, ha ha! Cheers, Terry. ;D
I was feeling sorry for myself because I couldn't afford new bike boots, until I met a man with no legs.

So I said, "Hey mate, you haven't got any bike boots you don't need, do you?"

Hmm, a  might harsh, wouldn't you say?

Any way, out of curiosity, I took a look at eBay that day for Indians and saw one, a '42 Four, great shape, 20 bids and three days to go and it was already to $38,000. I think they (almost any vintage bike though) are pretty cool. However, clearly some are out of my league $$-wise.

I've been keeping tabs on the 46'-53' Chief prices for about 10yrs and I.ve seen the go from about $8,000, or so, to around $13,000 and up. Some of the Fours, in the 40's, areanywhere from $45,000 to about $60,000 or so. Totally out of my range, for sure. Most I can swing are the diecast versions. Ha! Ha! My Dad had a Indian Warrior that he built with an AJS swingarm and warmed the motor up a bit. Made quite an interesting bike. As I look back now, the dollar value was ruined but, I'd love to have it for the sentimental reasons.

Terry, I'd hate to think that all the Indian collectors were like that but, probably most any collector of that magnitude is. I guess that's what having BIG BUCKS will do to some. I'll never know. Ha! Ha!                               Later on guys,  Bill
