Fork shimmy
« on: June 27, 2006, 07:53:03 PM »
My bike (750K7) has recently developed a slight shimmy at anything over 30MPH. The tires have about 400 miles on them. Wheels and tires were balanced when the tires were mounted, I checked runout front and rear, and both were less than 25 thousandths.
The shimmy isn't bad, just noticable. I can ride hands off for a distance and the bike tracks ok with just body lean.
What else can cause shimmy?

My first thought with a sudden onset shimmy not long after wheel balancing would be to see if the weights are still in place. The sort that's taped on is especially prone to flying off, in my experience.

If that's not the problem then just round up the usual suspects: Spoke tension, tire bubbles/cuts, steering bearing play/notches, triple clamp bolts.

I'd second the above, making sure the spokes are ALL tight. This symptom can show up during acceleration especially when spokes are loose. Lightly tap on each one. Each should
have a "ring"to it. A dull one without a tone is loose.

Edit: this is usually evident when the problem I mentioned is with the REAR wheel.
Sorry, topic title didn't sink in, not enough coffee yet :)
