Topic: Name that tank!.... Mystery Solved!

I've got a tank here that I can't identify. My experience is limited to mid to late 70's SOHC CB750's and I don't recognize this tank. The grey tank is a 74' CB750 tank, while the red tank has an identical cap and latch as the 750 tank, it is markedly different. The red tank is a little narrower at the front and rear, the red tank is also a little shorter in length, and the red tank has the petcock bung mounted at the rear of the tank with what appears to be two additional hose connections at the rear of the tank that point to the rear (a crossover tube possibly?). The underside of the tanks are also very different. So the question to the experts is:

Does anybody have any idea what this tank came from?

Seriously, without provisions for trim I'd say CL350.

Red tank look just like my 1972 CL 450 tank and other looks just like my 1973 CB450 tank. Could be CL350 and CB350 also. Hope this helps.

The grey tank is from a 74' CB750K for sure, I've been scouring other online forums (for picts) and parts fiches based on the suggestions here. It does appear to be in the 350 family, just trying to pin down the year. Doesn't help that the emblem recesses have been bondoed over. May strip the paint to help pinpoint the emblem recesses. Thanks for the input!

Sounds too tank-ish... Um, now that I've looked again, don't CL350's have the fill cap off to the side? I don't have a lot of experience with any 450 but don't remember crossover tubes on the ones I have seen. Where is the petcock mount?

Correct. I bought a really nice one in original candy ruby red (or close enough to) years ago thinking it was a 750 tank but when I realised that it wasn't, I ebayed it and sold it to a guy in Canada. Cheers, Terry.

Where is the petcock mount?

The petcock mounts at the right rear just in front of the crossover tube connection. Hard to see, but you might be able to just make it out in the 3rd picture.

I'm voting for CB350. The 68/69 and maybe 70 version has a screw on cap whereas the later versions have the pop button. Also, the CB version, the tank covers over where the rubber hold down is, where the CL is shorter and leaves it very open. The CL seat rides up over that part more than the CB does. Thus the slight difference.

That certainly looks like it! The parts fiches were throwing me off since all the ones I could find for the CB450K3 (71') indicate the chrome trim covering the seam along the outer edge similar to the picture of the CB350 above. Thanks, mystery solved!
