$12 aux fuel tank in one stop!
« on: August 01, 2012, 09:29:31 PM »
now i wanted an aux fuel tank to sync carbs and just be able to work on the bike without the tank so i made one for $12

went to o rileys auto parts and got this bad boy

it was like $7 and some change

it has an on/off, filter and lid

then what i did was get a 1/4" male to male connector which fit perfectly on the end of the funnel. $2

the i just put some plumbing tape and some zip ties just for good measure but i doubt i needed too. i also put a fuel filter on it that was laying around that was probably not needed either......

then on the end i took a 1/4" Y tube thing to split the single tube into 2 since u need 2 fuel lines to the cb550 $2

so with tax its around $12-13 for the essentials

there is also another tread with a professional cheap aux fuel tank but it was to expensive for me lol even though the title says $20 it was more like $25 with shipping and the rubber bung to be able to fill it with a funnel.... and i didnt want to wait 2-3 days for it to come in the mail hahaha

http://forums.sohc4.net/index.php?topic=106348.0

but its a very legit aux tank. if i wouldve planed ahead i probably wouldve went that route but my $12 does the job very very well

finished product

sorry the flood light stand kinda makes the last picture confusing looking  :P

Makes my driving lawnmower tank in a bird cage stand look weak.   ;)  Always thought a slave tank show me thread was good, will post pics after next trip---- Newbies though take note--Slave tanks are the way to check out your engine without polluting the work you may have done on your carbs from a CRAP tank. It all needs to be UBER clean as far as fuel flow !!

this is possibly the easiest/simplest brilliant idea I've seen in a while. Will definitely be making me one of those. Thanks for posting!

Old lacquer thinner can (metal) solder old fuel fitting in bottom.  Store with hose on top and lid tight.  Free, and easy.  I strap it to the rear of the frame for riding.  Two straps and it would be permanent.
36 years of this stuff, here to help.

nope dont need a hole.

the lid is more of a splash and dust cover.

its lot like a lid lid so you cant hold it upside down or anything.

but when ur done the 1/4 fitting that connects to the actually funnel end you can pull out and just drain the rest of your gas back into the gas can or into your bike.

Thanks for this writeup.  I have the exact same tank (think I found it at Walmart).  Any chance you can provide a close-up photo of the fittings that you used to connect it to the hoses?  The tank's clear hose has a little black fitting at the end of it and I'm having trouble understanding how to connect anything to that.

Also, did you use real fuel line for this?  Or is standard PVC tubing fine (for temporary use).

Thanks!

Aaron,  do not use anything other than real fuel line.  I put some on a Silverwing for a short ride and was stranded when the plastic bits that were eaten off by gas filled the carb bowls...Larry

Wow, thanks for the warning.  More carb issues is about the last thing in the world that I need!   I will use real fuel line.
