Afterlife Uses for Sprockets and Chains
« on: August 01, 2012, 09:55:58 PM »
Does anybody have any cool projects, uses, things that they use/make out of old sprockets and chains? I feel recycling or throwing them away isnt honoring them enough for what theyve been through for me  :D

I saw an old front sprocket repurposed as a side stand "pad" today. Not sure what thread, but it was pretty sweet looking. If I can recall it, I'll throw it up for reference.

There are artists out there that make cool stuff out of industrial waste. Fun stuff to look at as you can see how these everday heavy metal objects can be art to the right person. Other than that because I think we do think about recycling a little more than in the past, that old sprocket may someday be your new turn signal  mounting shaft   :)

Charlie's place in San Francisco made a cool dinosaur out of some welded up pieces.  If I can find a picture, then I'll post it.

I keep a length of old chain around to throw vice grips on when I forget to loosen the clutch hub nut before removing an engine. I guess you could also make a 1%'er belt, too. Chicks in New York pay top dollar for that stuff.

I think I started a trend many years ago.  I'd use three links of chain as a key fob.  I'd use what we cut off new chains when I worked a parts counter.

There is a "museum" south of colorado springs that mad dinosaurs out of old car parts.   I keep most of my sprockets just incase but chains get tossed in the scrap pile.

I am currently collecting strange and old pieces of metal for my wife to weld together into some kind of art.  Just have to pick up that welder next.

I'm more in to the chopper/bobber styles and we have one rider that used old sprockets( cut in half) as footboards and front sprockets(cut in half) as toe pads for his forward controls.. ONE OF A KIND for sure.

A few years ago, I took the aluminum rear sprocket off of a YZ100, polished it to a mirror finish, machined the centre to take a clock mechanism from a hobby store, put number stickers on it, then clear coated it. I gave it to my brother's boss who runs a small engine repair shop for Christmas.
If it's worth doing at all it's worth over-doing.
