Noise in transmission on the shifter side
« on: August 02, 2012, 02:48:59 PM »
It sounds like the dogs are barking in this transmission - similar to the sound a bike makes when a rookie pushes down too slowly on the shifter peg while the bike is running.

The racket happens in neutral clutch in or out.  Sometime first, but only with the clutch pulled in.  Under load it is quiet. It does not slip out of gear (yet) and neutral is easy enough to find (most of the time).

I suspect a bent fork is causing a dog fight in there but was hoping somebody had another viable theory?

What year is the motor? Check out this thread, and also the thread I linked in it.

Yup it's a 76 F.    I will be checking the snap rings for proper orientation and install.  Regardless the motor has to come out and cases split. Thanks Scottly.

Before you yank the motor, see if you can make it happen by leaning the bike and spinning the rear wheel; it would be good to know if it is a valid test.

I just went out and tried rocking side to side.  The noise starts and stops at its own will.  I can't get it to replicate on command.  I'm not discounting a janky c clip though.  It seems three saki lunches were in order on the production line in '76-'77.

My buddy bought this bike some months ago and while it has a bunch of go fast parts it also came with a lot of ham handed pecker tracks all over it.   The PO did have the cases apart and who knows what kind of foolishness lurks within.
