73 cb500 clutch issue HELP....
« on: August 02, 2012, 04:57:48 PM »
So heres the deal. Rode the bike last night and noticed first gear slip a little when taking off. This is the first 500 I've had and not sure whats what on this so I started to just jump in and try to adjust the clutch. On the left side where the cable is I loosened the screw that holds the fork on the back side of the cover. I heard something fall and though oh no I did something. So I took the cover off and the fork fell out. I set the fork back in place and ran the screw back in until tight from the outside of the cover. Put the plate back on and my shifter wont shift anything into gear. I don't know what happened but even when the cover is off it still wont shift in to gear. I would think that with the cover off and just rolling the bike it would shift like it usually does if I move it a little. Any ideas??

For what it's worth... 500's are notorious for slipping. If I'm jamming through my gears I'll get a slip. If I shift a bit conservatively and deliberately I won't.

I also noticed that the corner of my shifter sleeve is missing, cracked. I pulled it apart and spun it 180 degrees and now I have to tension in my clutch cable. I also noticed that sometimes when stopping and then trying to go to first my clutch wouldnt shift and then finally it would go into first if I let the clutch lever out a little and kept downshifting it to first. I'm wondering if my shifter forks are shot and I need to split the cases and put new ones in. But would it ride okay one night and then all of a sudden not shift the next day? I don't know what I did but I did something.
