NHRA rules/riding apparel/equipment question
« on: July 26, 2012, 07:31:56 PM »
Gateway Motorsports Park in St. Louis. An NHRA facility. I'd like to
run my 600RR during test and tune (1/4 mile)events for fun. Anyone know the rules concerning clothing and bike equipment?
This is a "bucket list" type thing. Never participated in any timed events at a facility, just watched. Any tips appreciated....

I would start with the basics - minimum Snell 2005 helmet, leather jacket, gloves, &  boots.  Jeans (??) maybe depending on speed.  Think I remember hearing if your ET is over 100mph then you need full leathers.  Also a tethered kill switch (http://www.mpsracing.com/products/MPS/hc01.asp).  I'd just call the track, they should be able to tell you.

From the 2010 rulebook, you have the following requirements for protective clothing:
"Full all-leathers or SFI Spec 40.1/2  suit mandatory on motorcycles running 120 mph or faster.  Two-piece suits must be joined together with a zipper at the waist. SFI Spec 40.1/1 or 40.1/2 suit or leather jacket, leather boots/shoes above the ankle, and leather gloves are mandatory on ALL motorcycles. Gloves must be Kevlar-lined or equipped with slide buttons. See General Regulations 10:10."

You probably won't be breaking 120 mph with your 600. Your helmet needs to have the Snell 2005 or newer sticker inside of it. You probably won't have to prove the Kevlar content of your gloves unless the tech guy doesn't like you. Make sure that there are no gas leaks nor oil residue that might come off of the bike onto the track. Wipe the bike down before tech if there is any question.

Good luck and have fun.

Yea be nice to the tech guy.  They can fail you for any reason or help you out.    Part of the reason I stopped at badi#$%*.  Never could fail me but there was a couple a$$holes that tried hard. Not that they cared there was so many people there with money.
18 grand and 18 miles dont make you a biker
