I have a few older friends in their 50's who got tatted when they were 18. Some of their tat's look good (for their age) , and others don't. One thing to remember is that the more detail their is, the more chance of the tat looking like crap as you get older, as when the skin gets looser (with age) , the tat will get distorted and look like ass.
EXAMPLE--> My tattoo I have is fairly simple, and should (I stress should) remain looking fairly the same as I get older, compared to a guy with a complicated design tattoo, with lots of detail and fine lines. His is more likely to look like crap as the years go on.
It's only been five years, but it still looks like the day that middle aged Danish woman spent seven hours (and chainsmoked two packs of cigarettes) crafting some of the finest straightest lines I have ever seen tattooed. Her name is Line (pronounced lee-neh in Dansk) her nickname is (you guessed it) fee-neh lee-neh, or fine line, or "nice Lee-nah." I had the design in my wallet for a year and a half and for that time I walked into any shop i saw and showed them the design. After about 100 instances of "that is too fine" "the detail won't last" and even "that HAS to be a back piece, no one will ever fit that on your arm" I was visiting my girlfriend in Denmark (she went to university there) and thought I would do my walk-in-walk-out at a tattoo shop we passed one day. Well, i walked in and showed her the design and she just stared at it for 15 minutes. finally saying "i want to do this." couldn't believe my ears. and when i told her that i really wasn't expecting her to want to do it, and I only have $125 (1000kr (ex. rate at the time)) she said she didn't care. long story a little less long if anyone is ever in copenhagen and needs a tatoveringer (sp?) check out miss roxy's (famous in hawaii for a long period of work there) shop:

you will see a picture of this tattoo in the window the day it was done (and it will look the same as the pic posted below.) as for when I am 80, I don't think it will be much different then either, but then again i can't imagine caring. nice thread PT glad to give it a bump.
