CB500 new clutch question
« on: July 27, 2012, 06:47:12 AM »
Hi
I just recently installed a new set of clutch friction plates on my CB500.  I've adjusted everything and all seems to be operating fine.  But here is my question.  From a standing start, I can gun the bike in 1st and 2nd and quickly run the bike up to 7000 rpm and the clutch seems to grab with to problems.  I can comfortably cruise at 70 mph in 5th, but if I suddenly crank the throttle open the revs go way up (slipping??) first, then the bike will slowly accelerate.  Is this normal?

Just wanted to provide an update if case someone ran into the same issue.  After replacing the friction plates I still had slippage at higher rpms.  I took the clutch assembly apart again and noticed that I had the now infamous broken clutch rod.  Of course I just missed an ebay auction where one sold for $19!  Instead I ordered a 3' length of 8mm drill rod for $5.  I cut it to length and ground the ends to fit properly, then installed it.

So far it seems to be shifting much better and the clutch grabs tightly even at full throttle.  I think the broken rod was getting hung up and not allowing the clutch pack to fully clamp down on the disks.

Hope this helps someone.
