it sucks getting older sometimes
« on: August 05, 2012, 08:00:42 PM »
i want to know  when did engines start getting heavy.i pulled out one of my cb750 engines tonight good gravy it weighed a ton.if it wasn't for my son and his friend i would have been screwed also i forgot to take the chain off in the first place.getting older is not treating me well. when they came into the shop i told them to be careful where they stepped, because when i went to pick up the engine my left nut dropped. they thought it was gross but i was serious.

I knew in my younger days when I would pick up and move old Volvo B18/B20 short blocks or rear axles and the like it would make my back sore for a week or so but I shrugged it off and sucked it up. Now dealing with chronic pain from low back herniated discs I wish I had been smarter.
Hernia is gonna make that nut rise instead of drop... :D

Yeah it sucks to get older and weaker.

Hang in there and remember you are older and wiser and you can buy hoists or come-alongs to make a mechanical thing do the heavy work for you. Lifting the bear frame off the motor with the bike on its side is an easier way to pull a motor if you dont have other tools or people to help pull the motor. Just tape up the frame and support the motor on its side makes it easier. Just need to pull more off the frame when doing it that way.

Ahh JamieB let me tell you, what you to look forward to, you come out to grab your coffee in the morning and decide, a little toast with aforementioned and maybe a little jam on the toast so you grab the the jar but because your right hand is sore ( some knuckles that you might have smashed a decade or so are puffed up for no reason ? and the first joint on your index finger is double its normal size? ) you say OK use the left hand and of course the lid is stuck so you strain and in the end you have use a tool to open but not before apparently damaging the little finger on the left hand so that next day it hurts like a sob and the day after etc so you say I'll take care of some weeds in the back forty so you try to put your shoes on but that's difficult because you've done something to your left foot ? ( maybe high sided one to many times when you were younger, maybe who knows ? ) and of course you hands are sore, walking is a treat, but you know if you don't walk enough the left knee and tendon you #$%*ed up when you fell on the ladder in January will stiffen and sting like a champ so  grab the cane hobble off to the lawn tractor/tank and say maybe get into Owen Sound next larger centre and see if you can get a cushion sole for the foot and when you get into the shoe stores the some young undamaged "twit" tells you that oh you need something to lift your arches and force you to walk on the ball of you foot ( The Sore bit ) even though after 3 years of "lifting em up 9" and driving them down 12" hasn't caused the arches to fall as well as 70 plus years hasn't made a difference either, so you say but I want the front part of my foot cushioned because that's where it's sore and they collectively say there, there old man it'll be allright if you just do as we say ( the pat on the head ) as an aside you ask why I didn't say no, well I did but my wife was with me so instead of destroying him/them I was polite (she gets upset when I try to rip them a new one ) any how what it boils down to getting old ain't for the weak or faint hearted. Enough you should get the picture by now and I'll leave the other distressing bits for you to experience and figure out. The only slightly good thing that maybe is now you can talk to about 75% of good looking young things and compliment and tease them without them freaking course on the downside you can't do anything about it, have fun.

I've noticed I'm much smarter as I've gotten older too.  Much more patient as well.  I used to bang stuff with wrenches and kick and punch stuff.  Maybe I was just and angry youth?   ???

I know the feeling.  Recently I decided I need to be in a little better shape, so I started jogging in the mornings.  Only 2 miles, 5 days a week, nothing major.  My reward?  Injured tendons in my left foot, so now I can't even walk right, and I'm on my feet 8-9 hours a day at work. >:(  Apparently I'm not 25 anymore. ::)

Oh, man....

Monday evening, I finished up the top end overhaul on my Suzuki GS450 TWIN!  Lifted the engine down off the bench onto the floor, then up into the frame.  Fiddled around and discovered the motor won't go into frame with the 3/4" tall breather cover installed, so motor back out, cover off, then lifted motor back in.  On a TWIN!

Today, I discover bruises developing on my forearms and front of right shoulder just from the WEIGHT of the motor and squeezing it while I wrestled it around.  Sheesh, how 'delicate' can a guy be?  :)

Oh man, jogging? That sh!t will kill you! I can't walk for weeks if I run down the block.
Fellas, I know it's a trend and everything, but -- for me, I've found yoga (and just general stretching) makes my world a better place. I'm not *that* old, dammit, but my family has arthritis and chronic pain issues that started to creep up on me in my 30s. Do the "restorative" or "gentle" or whatever they call the easy class of yoga. $10 a class, and usually you have the added benefit of fit young things bending every which way in front of you -- very restorative. You can avoid the dippier elements by trying classes at the local rec center, usually cheaper too.
I notice it big time when I haven't been going. Hands swell up, feet hurt, and my shoulders look like they belong to an 80-yr-old lady.

Just my $.02. Namaste, motherfxxxers!  :)

The bruises from putting my 500 back in the frame are gone but the exhaust mount bolts left some places that still haven't cleared up.

If you are going to run you have to stretch first.  I hurt my knees so bad initially I almost couldn't walk.  My wife asked me about stretching and I gave her that deer in the headlights look.  Ran my first marathon in February and still run 26 miles a week but I will not run without stretching first.  Stretch the quads, the hamstrings and the calves.  No problems since I started.  I have also lost 40 lbs in the last 2 1/2  years.

I'll be 48 in October.  Training starts in September for next years marathon.

Another thing that sucks, and you know what I mean if you have kids and back issues, my eldest girl is about 75 pounds and I can't carry her to bed anymore when she passes out on the couch.  I miss that!

i used to run too, we would do 4 minute sprints with a 30 second break. it was supossed to be the same as a 3 minute round in the ring.i did those every night and morning 3 weeks before a fight.also i would grapple for 25 minutes straight with a break just enough time for someone else to get in the ring it helped you with your wind.my weight class was super heavyweight 250 and up.so keeping your wind was a big issue.those are the days i missed i wouldn't do it now these guys are into ground and pound. no skill no form

As far as bruising goes the thing that bumms me out is you sometimes don't what you done hit banged into and next day you look like you've been abused by some one with a hammer ( according to Doc your skin tears underneath the surface and you bleed ) and that's something that wasn't in the use and care guide, also I used to kick things doing my Beckham imitation Jesus christ on a crutch where did the purple toes come from, enough from me I'll start to feel sorry for my self.

I woke one morning with a giant bruise on my bicep. Wracked my brain trying to remember what I bumped so hard to make a bruise that size. Turns out I slept with my pointy chin resting on my arm all night. WTF?
