False neutral in 4th
« on: May 25, 2022, 08:58:40 PM »
I've always had a bit of a false neutral shifting up to 4th on my 1976 CB750F. Reading the old period reviews it seems to have been a common problem. I'm pulling the engine next week is there anything I should look for?

I've noticed also that on a couple of my bikes there seems to be a little longer 'throw' at the 4th gear. Unless its popping out I would just be aware and give it a little extra tug on the toe. I find boots work better then my tennis shoes also.

Transmission might be worn if shifting to the "neutral" between 4 and 5 too often.
It is very easy to enter it if shifting to 5th too weak or if foot will accedentially put forth out if gear during acceleration which is normal

This is not an issue on my K6 after it got transmission with undercutted gears, 2-4.
I have seen that CycleX sell undercutted trans.

No need to have a trans in good shape that a shop can do the undercut grinding on.

We had a k7 with a broken thrust washer, pieces of it were in the pan. It was wierd and popped out of 4th.
No matter how many times you paint over a shadow, it's still there.

Good to know when an engine is not known inside.
Easy to miss a washer.

If gear pop out of gear very frequent, time for pulling engine and open it. While there more to replace.

You have to shift with some type of authority. If I don’t I’ll find a false neutral from 2-5 😆

I do shift with "authority", only have the problem going into fourth. The shift forks measured in spec when I had the engine apart, as did the gears and dogs. Just wondering what I should be looking for when I have the engine apart to fix a weeping head gasket. I never changed the bearings, could that contribute to the problem?

Gear selector mechanism like the drum?
Here more like 4 is tricky to get in gear, right?

Gear dogs if gear is in but slip very frequent during acceleration or deceleration.

I have only entered the "neutral" between 4-5 when not shifting like the others say, with authority or my foot move the shifter pedal.
