Anybody have any experience with the rz350?
« on: August 04, 2012, 06:49:43 PM »
Just purchased one today, and am looking for resources for aftermarket parts and forums. I've found Spec II, Two Stroke Shop, Rz's unlimited, and I now belong to the USA 2 strokers forum.

Thanks for any info and thoughts concerning this bike

I had the Kenny Roberts rep and what a great bike it was!  I had StageII pipes and Malcolm Smiths in Riverside where I bought the bike did the carbs.  It screamed and they handle great even stock.

I'm going to have to go through it before I can tell what shape it's really in. It runs, but I don't know how well sorted it is. There are a couple of minor issues that I've noted and will handle, but I'll know more when I bring it home later this week. FWIW, I'll be going out to see the Cannonball start off on something more appropriate for highway use, just in case I'm cramped for time on one side or the other.

these are one of the best bikes ever made , light , fast , reliable and handle well . if you want to go mad with it have a look at the tuning stuff they make for the banshee , ive just finished a 500cc engine for a customer it made very good hp on the dyno . they take them out to 700cc but i doubt they last long!

I drove it home from the dealer's today, almost 20 miles of inner Boston to the western suburb rush hour traffic at somewhere around 80 degrees. I think I hit every possible red light en route. The little ring-a-ding putted along contentedly, and the temp gauge indicated midway between the median and red line at it's very worst, and mostly stayed at the median line, even without a cooling fan. This evening I took a 10 mile back roads loop and opened it up a bit. Below 4000 it could be a beginners bike, there is nothing happening. Above 4k, things get busy, and from 5 k it pulls wonderfully to well past redline. The bike I purchased has Toomey expansion chambers, but still retains the stock carbs. I don't know if they've been re-jetted to match the pipes, or whether the airbox has been modified, but there is a bit of surging at 5k or so so I will be investigating. Also the front brake does not pull smoothly, it feels like something is causing friction after the first 10-15mm of the pull, so I will be messing with that too. Suspension is surprisingly good, clutch is good, and the transmission is very smooth and positive. Handling is light as is the bike, about 360lbs with fluids I reckon. I've read that at high speeds head shake can be an issue, and fitting a steering dampener is a good idea. I didn't notice it this eve and was close on 80 indicated at some points. One other wierd thing is that the charging system is minimal, for instance pulling either the front or rear brake to engage their respective lights causes the headlight to dim at idle. Very good ergos for me too, which is surprising as I am not a small guy.

Simon, are you saying that you built a 500cc twin or a v4? I've been looking at the available bling, and have thought of upgrading the intake parts. Does decking the head significantly reduce longevity, say .020 reduction? I'm wondering if that might be a way to gain a little torque, especially down low, or do I have to increase displacement as well?

Thanks!
Ben

it was a twin ben , i build a few of them for racing , mostly 350's but a couple of 430's and a 500 . i have a friend thats mad on them ,he builds the 700's [ they cost a fortune , billet cases etc ].
two strokes dont respond to tuning the same as four strokes and without measuring everything i would not start skimming the head . there are loads of bigger bore options on the net and you can get stroked cranks .
if you want to keep it reliable its probably best to leave it as it is . you do have to rev them a bit harder than a four stroke but once you get the hang of it you will find it great fun !
oh if its done more than about 25 thousand miles a new set of pistons and rings will perk it up no end

Thanks Simon! I've ordered a shop manual and will start going through the little guy as soon as I finish my cb750.
It's reassuring to know that you're well versed on this subject. I hope I might pm you for advise if I get myself in a corner?

All best,
Ben

When you are searching search for RD350 (power valve or YPVS)as they were known in Europe.
'Then' and 'than' are completely different words and have completely different meanings. Same with 'of' and 'have'. Set and sit. There, their and they're. Draw and drawer. Could care less/couldn't care less. Bought/brought FFS.
