Exhaust Thoughts
« on: August 07, 2012, 06:51:09 AM »
I'm rebuilding a 1971 cb500 four and am deciding what exhaust to use.  I'm making it mostly stock with some adjustments along the way.  I have  the original 4 into 4 exhaust, beat up a bit with a couple holes but they could be shined up.  I also have a black 4 into 1.  In terms of both performance and looks what do you prefer?

You should have a look at this thread:

The Motad is reasonably priced, looks nice, is as quiet as the original exhaust and does not require rejetting so you won't feel any performance issue.
If money is not an issue, you could buy new original pipes. Over here you can get them as cheap as $1,800 :)

My sarcastic response is: "What the hell does it matter what I think - it's not my bike."
My friendly response is: I just replaced a crusty 4 into 2 exhaust on my CB550 with an original 4 into 4. I prefer the 4 into 4 myself. If you are going for a stock, original look - this is the way to go. On mine, no rejetting was required (probably because the previous owner never did it when he swapped the exhaust in the first place). It definitely runs a bit better with the stock exhaust in place. It really just comes down to preference. I think any performance loss or gain is negligible.

Like someone already said if you want original and cost is not an issue buy em. I wouldn't put pipes with holes in them back on a bike I was riding or fixing.  Just seems like bad form.

My 72 CB500 came with ratty 4 into 2 pipes full of holes and buying originals were not an option.  Bought the MAC 4 into1 black with silver pipe and am very happy with the sound of the bike.

If cost is an issue go with the ones you already have that don't have holes in them.

Personally I think the bike looks better with the 4 into 1 but one thing I haver noticed on these forums is people always tend to favor what they spent their money on and I am no exception.

As far as exhausts that are available to buy, I think the oem 4-4 looks best.  I think that all the aftermarket ones, from an aesthetic standpoint, leave too much "vacant space" on the bike... unless that's the look you're after.

I can't comment much about a performance standpoint.  Are there any aftermarket 4-4 systems?
