Harley 16' wheel laced to 550 hub?
« on: October 03, 2011, 02:53:36 PM »
Has anyone done this before, and what problems might I run into.? I found a guy locally selling a 550 hub w a harley 16' rim. I think it would give it a beefier look for the back of my bike.  I like the way it looks. (also widens my variety of tires to choose from.)  Chain and fender clearance should be alright right????

Any ideas would help, dont wanna buy the wheel and a new tire if im just going to run into issues.  My bike setup is pretty much stock.

713, Both PO of both my KO and K6 CB750's put 130/90/16 tire on the rear. Doing this was standard issue back in the 70's. It does give you a beefer look from the rear witch I like, but from the side view there's a little to much space between tire and fender for my taste. Both bikes ride and handle good. I will sooner or later go back to the factory size I'm sure because I want both CB's in stock trim. Here's a pic of my KO with the 16" rear.

My '76 750 has the same setup as Dhall there.  16" Harley rim laced to the 750 hub.  You may run into chain alignment/spacer issues if you used a 750 hub.

why not just get the rear wheel of a cb650c?  I guess the drawback would be that it'd be comstar mags, but they're still kinda sexy in their own way.

It looks like I am going to meet him up to buy it later this week.  I think it will be a good addition onto my build.  Im just worried about chain issues...I don't want any rub..

Its laced to a 76 550 hub which would be interchangeable for my 75 no problem right? I dont need another paper weight at the house....lol I have too many as is!

I have a Lester 16" wheel on the back of my 76 550F running a 130/90 Bridgestone BT45. I just had to cut a notch on the inside of the chain guard for tire clearance.

I laced a 16" Harley hoop to my cb500 hub and it works just fine. I bought new spokes, laced it up and took it to my local shop for truing and tire balancing.

Sounds good, he said its wrapped w a 5.00x16 right now. looking at putting the same size tire back on.

Does anyone know the width of a harley rim that would apply to this?  After putting around online a bit, it looks to be a standard rim 3.00x16.  If anyone knows about this, or even some of the guys that replied to this post, what are you running rim-wise..?

Thanks
Matt

Guys, sorry for digging this up but I'm looking for some knowledgeable input. I have '80 CB650 and I want to run a 16" wire spoke wheel on the back. I found a 16" 40 hole Harley rim online but I'm trying to source the correct spokes. Any suggestions? Also is there another Honda that came with a 16" rear wire wheel that will just line right up or maybe even an 18" wheel?
(no one makes white walls in 17", which is what I have on there now)

Thanks guys!

It is done but you are dealing with different hub sizes between the Harley and the 550. The harley rim will be designed for having spokes angling out to that width and circle. Those angles dont coincide with the honda hub. This can cause the spokes to be stressed when laced which can result in broken spokes.

Inspect carefully for spokes that bow in or out between hub and rim and examine the rim and hub to see the holes are properly sized...  so you end up buying a properly built wheel.

Buchannans can redrill if necessary the hub or rim and can properly lace the two up. Send them the hub and rim and for a fee they assemble and true it. As refunds on custom made spokes and other products arent the norm.

I think you'll need to measure carefully as i dont think a 5.0 x 16 tire would fit the stock cb550 rear
control arm. But i might be surprised that it would. The 650 naturally has a bigger rim and rear control arm  so you may be in luck. The 16 in circle is going to be different than the 18"  circl so it will be noticeable atthe front and back of the fender.

You need a 'drop spoke' to lace your hub to that rim i believe.  check ebay or buchanans, i believe my spoke kit was an ebay item, nice thick stainless.

Why can't he just take an already made cb750 hub that is prelaced and change out the sprocket thing a ma bob to the cb750 hub.  I've done similar things with different size wheels on cb650s with no problems.

The CB750 cush drive and 550 are not the same size. I know I've run complete 550 rear wheel assy on CB750s with just a little spacer modifications, I beleive everything else matched right up. Why can't you go and install the CB750 assy on the 550?

I bought a new HD type 16" rear rim.

The solution for me was found at bucanan's spokes. Only place I could find them.

Part# KHON202SS. Spokes custom made back in the day to lace up CB750 hubs to 16" Harley rims. I spoke to an employee over the phone (very helpful btw) and he said these would work on my 650 hub and he was also aware of the angles the hub vs. rim would make and said not to worry.

As soon as I have it all together I'll post up some pics. Thanks for the help!
