master cylinder snap ring pliers
« on: August 18, 2009, 04:11:48 PM »
So I didnt want to spend the $$ on a pair of m/c snapring pliers to rebuild one m/c. I was talking to an older gent @ local auto parts store & he suggested cutting two small size allen wrenches & grind the tips into small round tips, similar to snapring tips, to fit in my multi cheapie snapring pliers. It worked!

That is an inconceivably egregious transgression against my rudimentary concordance of socially shunned individuals.

Looks like that would work too. Figured there was something here, but still wanted to share this.

I just did this today on a master cylinder with a sticking piston. My technique was to press the piston in all the way, and it would stick there, then I took an awl and stuck it in the holes in the snap ring, then pried it out.

I bought a set of needle nose pliers and a grinder wheel for my dremmel. Put the pliers in a vise and go around and around on the end of the pliers until the tips are small enough to go into the holes. IIRC $7 for the pliers and it works like a professionally made tool.

I got a pair of pliers at Autozone, see the picture.

I believe they would work with the master cylinder - but if not, custom pins can be easily made for them.

Quite clever design actually.
